ANNOUNCEMENTS
Service of Dedication Aug. 25
Faculty, staff, emeriti and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. President Carlson will deliver her State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the Service of Dedication so that as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow in Bentdahl Commons.

2016 Orientation Guide now available
A printed copy of the 2016 Orientation Guide was sent to department offices and some individuals on campus. All faculty and staff can access the guide on the Student Life webpage. The guide includes daily schedules for orientation-related events and information about Paideia sessions, advising meetings and music auditions.
Marcia Gullickson appointed to College Resource Council
Marcia Gullickson has been appointed to serve as a staff representative on the College Resource Council. She will serve a three-year term, replacing Tanya Gertz.
The College Resource Council serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration and Regents of the College, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation, and in the planning of the budget. Staff representatives are nominated by staff members and appointed by the President.
The 2016-17 College Resource Council includes President Carlson, Scott Carlson, Chris Garcia-Prats, Marcia Gullickson, Steve Holland, Kevin Kraus, Jon Lund, Guy Nave, Britt Rhodes and Eric Runestad.
Farewell reception for Tanya Gertz Aug. 16
After 11 years as director of campus programming, Tanya Gertz's last day at Luther will be Wednesday, Aug. 17. Tanya has been appointed executive director of fine arts programming at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University in central Minnesota. Faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend a farewell reception in her honor from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in the Center for Faith and Life lobby. There will be a brief program at 2:30 p.m. Please join us as we thank Tanya for her exceptional service to Luther College and the Decorah community.
Retirement reception for Jim Buzza Aug. 25
After 13 years as coordinator of Dorian Festivals and Camps, Jim Buzza will retire at the end of August. Faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend a farewell reception in his honor from 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, in the Mostrom-Bahe Lobby in Jenson-Noble (outside the NRH). There will be a brief program at 10 a.m. Please join us as we thank Jim for his exceptional service to Luther College and the Decorah community.
Wellness blood screenings Sept. 13 and Oct. 13
Still need to do a wellness blood screening for 2016? There are just two more on-campus screenings this year: 6:30-8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, and Thursday, Oct. 13, in Mott. Fasting is required for 12 hours prior to the blood draw. To sign up for a time, email Vicky, <jaegervi>. Cost for the basic blood draw is $40; a blood draw for a PSA test for men over age 40 is an additional $45. Payment is required the day of the blood draw and will be reimbursed. Cost for an A1C blood draw is $30. For the A1C test, your physician must send the request to the lab before the day of the blood draw. The $30 fee will be applied to the normal deductible and out-of-pocket limits.
Seeking faculty and staff who were first-generation college students
Luther College has an exceptional history of serving first-generation college students. Typically, at least 20 percent of the students in an incoming class are first-generation college students. Student Life is building a directory of faculty and staff who were first-generation college students. Those interested in serving as a resource for students would be identified on a first-generation resource web page; an optional 250-word reflection can be included with the listing. If interested, please affirm online.
KATIE open workshop Aug. 17
A KATIE open workshop will be held from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, in Hovde Lounge. This is a "come and go as you please" working session. Take this opportunity for Q&A and hands-on assistance from KATIE Support Team members. All participants should bring a laptop and some relevant course information, such as a syllabus or files to upload.
Luther Women's Basketball Junior Norse
Join Luther Women's Basketball for the third year of Junior Norse! Girls in grades 2-5 are invited to improve their fundamental skills and learn to love the game of basketball with the 2016-17 LCWBB team. Junior Norse meets four Thursdays this fall (Sept. 15, 22 and 29, and Oct. 6) from 6:15-7:30 p.m. in the Regents Center. Cost is $45 and includes a t-shirt. Luther receives $300,000 grant from W.W. Kellogg Foundation
The Center for Sustainable Communities has received a $300,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to be used over the next two years to provide support to early childhood care environments in northeast Iowa. The program, which will be conducted in collaboration with several northeast Iowa organizations, makes it possible for children and families to make and learn how to make healthy choices about good food and physical activity in their daily lives.
New platform for Visual Media and Sports Information photos
In August 2016, the Visual Media and Sports Information offices will transition from using Flickr to using Libris by Photoshelter to host photos taken by Photo Bureau and Sports Information photographers. Libris offers a much cleaner, more organized user experience that should save time and headache when finding and using images produced by our departments. Flickr will still remain active to host our current archive, but no new images will be uploaded to Flickr from this point on. Please contact <photobureau> with questions.
Sign up for fall swim lessons
Registration is now open for fall swim lessons with the Luther swim team. All lessons are 30 minutes in length. Lesson times are as follows:
Session 1: Sept. 5-9 at 4:30, 5, 5:30, or 6 p.m.
Session 2: Sept. 12-16 at 4:30, 5, 5:30 or 6 p.m.
Session 3: Five Sundays (Sept. 11, 18 and 25, Oct. 2 and 9) at 11 or 11:30 a.m.
The registration form is available online. Cost is $60 per child, per session; participants must be at least four years old. Thank you for supporting Luther Swimming and Diving.

Catering Showcase Aug. 16
The catering professionals of Luther College cordially invite Luther faculty and staff to the first Catering Showcase from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, in Peace Dining Room. The fresh new Catering guide, created by our talented chefs, will be unveiled. The showcase features displays of gourmet appetizers, exciting new entree selections, bountiful buffets, decadent desserts and so much more, including samples of select items. CaterTrax demonstrations will take place in the Nobel Room at 11 and 11:30 a.m., noon, 12:30 and 1 p.m.
The great crepe reveal Aug. 17
Crepes are coming to Sunnyside Cafe this fall and the Luther community is invited to enjoy a special sneak peak of the treat. Visit Sunnyside Cafe between 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, to try a strawberry crepe or savory ham and cheese crepe for a one-time special price. Sunnyside Cafe is located in the Center for the Arts.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
A collage comprised of fragments of text created by David Kamm is included in "Sola Scriptura: Biblical Art and Text, Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation." The group exhibit contains a mix of historic objects and contemporary art and is currently on display at Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. It will travel to a variety of locations over the next two years, including a stop at Luther College near the end of 2017.
Kirk Larsen published two articles in the summer issue (Vol. 62) of American Entomologist. He coauthored "Entomology at Small Liberal Arts Colleges," which introduced a series of articles he helped edit. The second article was titled "Teaching scientific writing in an undergraduate entomology course using mealworms and sandpaper."

EDITORIAL COMMENT
And finally...
It's Day 11 of the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and there have been several important "Olympic Firsts" so far:
- First Olympics to take place in South America.
- Simone Manual won the women's 100-meter freestyle, becoming the first African-American woman to win an individual gold medal in swimming. She also won a gold medal as a member of the women's 4x100-meter medley and silver medals in the 50-meter freestyle and the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
- Ibtihaj Muhammad was the first American athlete to compete wearing a hijab, a religious head covering sometimes worn by Muslim women. She won a bronze medal in Team Sabre as a member of the United States fencing team.
- First Olympics for the new Refugee Olympic Team, comprised of ten athletes from Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- First Olympic medals for Kosovo (gold, women's judo) and Fiji (gold, men's rugby sevens).
