COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Lectures and Fine Arts request for funds

The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee is reminding faculty and staff seeking funds to bring speakers, artists and lecturers to campus for the 2017-18 academic year of important upcoming dates. The committee's review cycle begins this April. The first window for applications opens onApril 15 and closes on April 29. After April 29, the committee will review all submitted applications and allocate funds to the most qualified applications by May 15. Applications received after April 29 but before September 1 will be reviewed in early September, and applications received in September will be reviewed in early October. The committee will respond to applicants within three weeks of the respective deadline.

The committee welcomes all applications for campus event funding in amounts up to $1,500 per event. Applications with substantiated significant campus impact may request more than $1,500. All faculty and administrative staff members in the Luther community may submit proposals to the LFA Committee to request funds for specific events. In general, LFA will not provide ongoing annual or biennial funding. Proposals must be submitted through the LFA webpage. Contact Dean, <vespde01>, with questions.

Call for Paideia Texts and Issues presentation proposals

The Paideia Endowment Governing Board invites members of the Luther community to propose presentations on the theme "Be the Change" for the 2017-18 Texts and Issues Lecture Series. Participants are encouraged to address the theme from the perspective of a wide variety of texts drawn from the arts, sciences and humanities. If interested in participating in the lecture series, please submit a tentative title and a brief 250-word proposal by Friday, May 12. Find the proposal form online.

Call for presentation proposals: The Reformation of Everything 1517-2017 symposium

All faculty, staff, students and emeriti are invited to take part in Luther's symposium, "The Reformation of Everything, 1517-2017" on October 31, marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The committee charged with organizing the symposium is now accepting proposals for presentations, performances and exhibits on any aspect of the Reformation or its legacy. New guidelines for using film in courses

A task force on use of film in instruction reviewed current practices and options for streaming film for courses. There are new policies that may impact course syllabi, as well as a set of guidelines to help instructors navigate their options. TIAA counseling sessions

TIAA announces individual counseling sessions 8:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, and 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Friday, May 5. Space is limited - register online or by calling 800-732-8353 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday-Friday. Sessions will be held at the Financial Aid Conference Room.

Faculty recognition dinner May 11

The Luther community is invited to the faculty recognition dinner Thursday, May 11, to honor retiring faculty Mark Johns and John Moeller and to pay tribute to Barbara Bohach and Laurie Iudin-Nelson after 25 years of service. A reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Hammarskjold, and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. Tickets are $12 on salenow through May 8at the Ticket Office or online.

Summer employment at Luther

Human Resources is accepting applications for summer employment from non-Luther students who are at least 16 years old. There are still multiple positions available in grounds and facilities services. Current Luther students will have priority consideration, followed by incoming first-year students, then dependents of Luther employees and finally members of the larger community, providing the appropriate requirements are met. Please complete the 2017 Summer Applicationand returned it to the Human Resources Office.

Health care update reminder

A reminder that participants in Luther's health plan must go to the UMR website to indicate if they have additional health insurance annually. For example, a person's spouse might have additional coverage through their employer, etc. This will keep any disruption in payment of claims to a minimum as claims are processed. Click on "Other Insurance" button in the middle of the screen and answer the questions, then click "submit."

National award information session

Encourage students to attend a session at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Olin 101 to learn about the nationally competitive awards for which Luther College nominates students and alumni. From Fulbright to Udall, all awards have unique qualities that will engage a student's intellect and curiosity about the world. Find more information online. CEPE great book giveaway

The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites faculty, staff and students to the end-of-year great book giveaway 9:40-10:50 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, in Olin 214. Community garden plots

Community garden plots are currently available. Full plots are 20 feet by 20 feet for $30, half plots are 20 feet by 10 feet for $20 and student plots are 10 feet by 10 feet for $10. Luther Serves 2017

Student volunteers from the Luther College Student Congregation will help Decorah residents with spring chores on Saturday, April 29, when Luther holds its annual "Luther Serves" community service day.Volunteers will help Decorah residents with yard work, planting, light housework, window removal and cleaning and other spring chores. Decorah residents may sign up by contacting Luther College Ministries, 387-1040, or <ministry> byTuesday, April 25. Please provide a brief explanation of the household or yard tasks to be completed. Chair Massages in Bunche

​Wellness is hosting a massage therapist on campus for chair massages Mondays May 8 and May 22. Cost is $1 per minute. Cash, check or card accepted at appointment. Massages can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy, improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. May Fourth Star Wars party

The Book Shop will host a Star Wars party from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Thursday, May 4, featuring games, discounts, food and more. 'How to Protect Yourself on Social Media'

Chris Pallaris, director and principal consultant at i-intelligence, a commercial intelligence consultancy based in Zurich, Switzerland, will give a talk called "How to Protect Yourself on Social Media" at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 in Olin 102. His talk will be geared toward those who wonder if they are safe on social media and how they can improve security. Pallaris's talk, sponsored by the economics and business departments, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'The Doctrine of Discovery and U.S. Genocidal History and Policies'

Award-winning author, activist and historian Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz will present a lecture titled "The Doctrine of Discovery and U.S. Genocidal History and Policies" at7 p.m.Tuesday, April 25, in Valders Room 206. She will discuss the history of the relationships between Native American people and the U.S. government, including an exploration of what the "Doctrine of Discovery" meant for the Native Americans whose homelands were "discovered."

Cathedral Choir performance April 25

Cathedral Choir will present a concert at7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 25, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is the culmination of Cathedral Choir's annual Midwest Tour. The program's theme is "Let My Love Be Heard: the Love this World Needs," and features works by Craig Hella Johnson, Connor Koppin, Sven Lemberg, Johann Pachelbel, Alice Parker and Jake Runestad. The choir will be accompanied by Brad Schultz, Luther visiting instructor in music and class of 2007. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission, and will be streamed live atstream.luther.edu/music.

Film screening: 'Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope'

Luther's social work and education departments, along with several community initiatives are sponsoring a screening of James Redford's powerful documentary, "Resilience," at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 in Valders 206. Open to the public with no charge for admission, the film examines childhood trauma and community-led responses. Following the film screening, there will be a brief discussion with community partners.

Luther Admissions event for Decorah High School students

A team of Launching Luther Leaders (L3) students is working with Admissions to host an event exclusively for Decorah High School students. This casual, student-only event will connect current DHS students with Viking alumni who presently attend Luther. Visitors will learn from Decorah natives what life at Luther is really like, then participate in a student-led evening tour. The event takes place on Wednesday, April 26, from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. Ice cream and glow sticks will be provided! More information is available online.

'13 Reasons Why' discussion

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month comes to an end and Mental Health Awareness Month begins, Counseling Service and Active Minds are sponsoring an informal discussion. The Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" contains graphic content regarding topics such as suicide, sexual assault and bullying. A discussion on the series and the issues it presents will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 in Larsen Room 120.

Luther College Ringers and Cantorei spring concert

Luther College performing ensembles Cantorei and the Luther Ringers will perform a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the NRH. Cantorei will perform "No Time" by Susan Brumfield and works arranged by Dan Forrest and Z. Randall Stroope. Maasai cultural guide events

Maasai dance event

Leboy Oltimbau and Musa Kamaika, members of the Maasai tribe of Tanzania, are in residence at Luther College this spring. OnFriday, April 28, Oltimbau and Kamaika will perform traditional and contemporary Maasai dancing and singing, inviting the audience to join in. The event will begin at8:30 p.m.in Marty's. The event is sponsored by the Luther College Diversity Center, Student Activities Council Leadership Council and the sociology, anthropology and social work departments.

'Culture Change among the Maasai of Tanzania'

Jazz Band to perform April 29

Don Kemp Memorial lecture

In honor of the life of social work faculty member Don Kemp, Luther will host Iowa Representative Mark Smith as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial lecture. In his talk, "Social Workers Stand Up," Smith will discuss the connection between social work and social policy, and how he has embodied this in his career as a social worker and elected official. The lecture, which is open to the public with no charge for admission, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in Baker Common.

Religion Forum: "Trusting a God of Justice: On Forgiveness and the Unarmed Black Man"

Dr. Daniel Morris from Augustana College presents the lecture "Trusting a God of Justice: On Forgiveness and the Unarmed Black Man" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 in Valders 206. In the wake of several recent murders of innocent unarmed black men, a strange phenomenon has developed - members of the press routinely ask family members if they will forgive their loved ones' killers. This lecture is part of the "Who Do You Trust" Paideia Texts and Issues lecture series. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission, a reception will follow.

Dancing with the Luther Stars

Three Luther faculty members paired with three students from the ballroom club go head to head in the annual "Dancing with the Luther Stars." Inspired by a popular ABC show, the event returns to bring excitement and friendly rivalry to campus at7:30 p.m.Wednesday, May 3, in the CFL. The event is sponsored by Luther College Ballroom and Swing and SAC Special Events. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ticket Office.

Job postings

Coordinator of Diversity Recruitment: Admissions seeks a full-time coordinator of diversity recruitment. The coordinator will work with area programs serving under represented students and support diversity as well as assist in the recruitment and retention efforts for Luther. Must be willing to travel extensively and make public presentations. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and a positive driving record that will enable them to be insured through the college.

Security Officer: Full-time security officer toprovide for the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. Officers perform multiple tasks, including random patrol of building and grounds on foot and by vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity and other conduct issues with an emphasis on prevention. The primary hours for this position will be3:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m. or3:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m., or a combination of both. Scheduled hours will include weekends and holidays. A high school diploma or GED is required; some college is preferred.

Strategic Media Relations Fellow:The Media Relations and Visual Media Departments seek a highly detail-oriented and organized person for a 12-month, full-time position as Strategic Media Relations Fellow. Responsibilities include supporting both Media Relations and Visual Media through writing press releases, distributing mass communication, managing schedules, supporting the creation of visual content, front desk management including interacting with clients and key constituents, as well as assisting in managing student workers. Candidate must be able to pleasantly interact with clients in challenging situations. Experience in communications field required with preference going to candidates with experience in social and visual media. This position is for a one-year term and is only open to internal applicants (graduating students, current employees, and their spouses).

Multimedia Strategic Fellow:The Multimedia Strategic Fellow participates on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to assist the Multimedia Lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Supervisory responsibilities include daily management of the multimedia ticket queue and multimedia student staff productivity. This is a one-year, full-time position that will overlap by approximately one month with the incoming Multimedia Strategic Fellow.

Elizabeth Steding has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant to conduct research and teach in Münster, Germany during the 2018 spring semester.Her research examines the portrayal of East German literature in curricula and textbooks used in German secondary schools between 1985 and 2015. She will also teach a course at the University of Münster on incorporating East German literature in the classroom.

Hongmei Yu presented "A girl from Hunan: a pedagogical journey from literature to film" at the 2017 AsiaNetwork conference on April 9 in Chicago. She also served as a judge for the 2017 US Midwest Chinese Bridge Speech Contest on April 15 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
