Celebration of Life for Weston Noble

Luther College will hold a celebration of life for Weston Noble at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the CFL Main Hall. The service is open to the public with general admission seating; tickets will not be issued for this event. The service will also be streamed live on the Luther website.

Those planning to attend the service are asked to fill out the RSVP form to help college staff prepare for the number of guests. For more information, visit luther.edu/weston.

Call for Paideia Texts and Issues presentation proposals

The Paideia Endowment Governing Board invites members of the Luther community to propose presentations on the theme "Be the Change" for the 2017-18 Texts and Issues Lecture Series. Participants are encouraged to address the theme from the perspective of a wide variety of texts drawn from the arts, sciences and humanities. If interested in participating in the lecture series, please submit a tentative title and a brief 250-word proposal by Friday, May 12. Find the proposal form online.

Call for presentation proposals: The Reformation of Everything 1517-2017 symposium

All faculty, staff, students and emeriti are invited to take part in Luther's symposium, "The Reformation of Everything, 1517-2017" on Oct. 31, marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The committee charged with organizing the symposium is now accepting proposals for presentations, performances and exhibits on any aspect of the Reformation or its legacy. Proposals can be submitted online. Review will begin on May 7. Contact Robert Christman, <chriro05>, with questions.

New guidelines for using film in courses

A task force on use of film in instruction reviewed current practices and options for streaming film for courses. There are new policies that may impact course syllabi, as well as a set of guidelines to help instructors navigate their options. TIAA retirement workshop

A TIAA retirement workshop, titled, "Paying Yourself" will be held at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, May 4, in the CFL Recital Hall. The workshop will discuss retirement planning. There are many things to consider in planning one's income during retirement, including tax implications, that can affect income. TIAA's workshop leader will help attendees:

  • Understand the basic rules governing most common retirement accounts
  • Gain perspective on when to withdraw different assets
  • Discover the income choices TIAA offers

Reserve a seat at the workshop by calling 800-732-8353 weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. central time or register online. The workshop is offered at no additional cost to Luther employees.

Desserts in Decorah hosts needed

The Luther community is invited to get involved with a fun orientation tradition. The Student Life office is looking for local faculty, staff and alumni to host small groups of students for "Desserts in Decorah" from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 29. Hosts need only provide a dessert, a gathering place and an enthusiastic welcome to new Luther students. Consider co-hosting with a friend, neighbor or colleague. Fiscal year end reminder

The end of the fiscal year is approaching, and all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by Wednesday, May 31, to be expensed to a fiscal year 2016-17 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 9, to be included in the fiscal year 2016-17 budget. No faxed copies will be accepted. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 2. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Seeking friendship families for new international students

The Luther Diversity Center seeks individuals and families in the Decorah community to help incoming international students adjust to life at Luther and in the United States. The goal of the program is to promote international understanding and develop an appreciation of how others live and view the world. Interested individuals and families can sign up on the Diversity Center website.

Winneshiek County housing survey

Winneshiek County is conducting a housing study to better understand the current status of housing in our area. The goal of the housing study is to generate actions for the future that will overcome challenges and take advantage of opportunities. This survey is open to all Winneshiek County residents and is also for Winneshiek County workers who live in other counties. The survey is available online. 

Faculty recognition dinner May 11

The Luther community is invited to the faculty recognition dinner Thursday, May 11, to honor retiring faculty Mark Johns and John Moeller and to pay tribute to Barbara Bohach and Laurie Iudin-Nelson after 25 years of service. A reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Hammarskjold, and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. Tickets are $12, on sale now through May 8 at the Ticket Office or online.

Summer employment at Luther

Human Resources is accepting applications for summer employment from non-Luther students who are at least 16 years old. There are still multiple positions available in grounds and facilities services. Current Luther students will have priority consideration, followed by incoming first-year students, then dependents of Luther employees and finally members of the larger community, providing the appropriate requirements are met. Please complete the 2017 Summer Application and return it to the Human Resources Office.

Health care update reminder

A reminder that participants in Luther's health plan must go to the UMR website to indicate if they have additional health insurance annually. For example, a person's spouse might have additional coverage through their employer, etc. This will keep any disruption in payment of claims to a minimum as claims are processed. Click on "Other Insurance" button in the middle of the screen and answer the questions, then click "submit.

CEPE great book giveaway

The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites faculty, staff and students to the end-of-year great book giveaway, 9:40-10:50 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, in Olin 214. Come and take a look at some of the books that will help shape next year's "Difficult Conversations" theme and fall book groups. A free book raffle will be available and treats will be served. Stories about three Luther seniors have been added to the International Studies websiteFabian Pop Pop shares how courses in his international studies major have given him the tools to explore and better comprehend world events. Emily Alcock and Kylie Hanschman, also international studies majors, describe internships they did while at Luther. Kylie worked with two nonprofits in downtown Chicago that are raising awareness of issues about women's health and development. Emily worked with Border Angels, a nonprofit in San Diego doing migrant outreach and leading educational trips.

Luther baseball childhood cancer fundraiser

Luther baseball will host a game dedicated to raising money for children's cancer at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at home. The team would love members of the community to come out to show support and help spread awareness by wearing yellow. Donations and more information can be found online. All proceeds will be donated to the Vs. Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Don Kemp Memorial lecture: 'Social Workers Stand Up'

In honor of the life of social work faculty member Don Kemp, Luther will host Iowa Representative Mark Smith as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial lecture. In his talk, "Social Workers Stand Up," Smith will discuss the connection between social work and social policy, and how he has embodied this in his career as a social worker and elected official. The lecture, which is open to the public with no charge for admission, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in Baker Commons.

Luther College Religion Forum series: 'Who Do You Trust'

The Luther College Religion Department will host Daniel A. Morris for a lecture as part of the "Who Do You Trust" Religion Forum Series. The lecture will take place at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 2, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. Morris's lecture, "Trusting a God of Justice: On Forgiveness and the Unarmed Black Man," questions the trustworthiness of law enforcement and the media in a time when the murders of innocent, unarmed black people have shocked the nation.

'Islam and Pre-emptive incarceration'

Human rights lawyer Kathy Manley will join Ikraan Abdurahmān and Mariam Abu-Ali, whose brothers were imprisoned under the auspices of terrorism-related investigations, to discuss their experiences with the U.S. justice system and the Patriot Act in a panel titled "Islam and Pre-emptive Incarceration" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in Olin 102. The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms.

Spring opera performance: 'The Gondoliers' May 4-7

Featuring a cast of 35 talented students, "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert and Sullivan will be presented by the Luther College Music Department at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Jewel Theatre. Tickets, which are $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under, can be purchased online at www.tickets.luther.edu or via the Luther Ticket Office, 387-1357 or <tickets>. Directed by Andrew Whitfield and Ed Andereck and conducted and accompanied by Nicholas Shaneyfelt, "The Gondoliers" follows a tale of royalty, marriage and misadventure.

Dancing with the Luther Stars

Three Luther faculty members paired with three students from the ballroom club go head to head in the annual "Dancing with the Luther Stars." Inspired by a popular ABC show, the event returns to bring excitement and friendly rivalry to campus at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the CFL. The event is sponsored by Luther College Ballroom and Swing and SAC Special Events. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ticket Office.

This year's faculty members are Amanda Bailey, Luther head women's basketball coach, Joan deAlbuquerque, director of bands and associate professor of music and Kevin Wenger, Ylvisaker hall director. Bailey is partnered with Stephen Ster, Luther senior; deAlbuquerque is partnered with Joshua Weisenburger, Luther senior; Wenger is partnered with Jessica Skjonsby, Luther senior.

Film screening: '13th'

Just Action is hosting a screening of the thought-provoking documentary "13th" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in Valders 206. The documentary discusses the U.S. government's criminalization of African Americans, highlighting the context and current state of mass incarceration in the country. The film screening is open to the public with no charge for admission. Popcorn will be served free of charge, and a discussion will follow the film screening.

Student research symposium 

Luther will host the annual student research symposium Friday, May 5, with an opening convocation beginning at 9 a.m. in the Main Hall of the CFL. The day will include concurrent oral presentations and performances, complimentary dessert on Bentdahl Commons, a poster session and evening performances. The complete program can be found online.

Theatre performance: 'Becky Shaw'

Luther College's Visual and Performing Arts Department presents Gina Gionfriddo's "Becky Shaw," May 5-6 in Storre Theatre. After a blind date goes disastrously wrong, five characters must reevaluate their relationships with themselves and each other. Chaos, drama and heartbreak ensue. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5; and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door, online or via the Luther Ticket Office, 387-1357 or <tickets>.

Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital: Cynthia Heck

Luther College will host the Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in the NRH. An award ceremony and reception will follow the recital. The program and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission. The recital will feature the recipient of the scholarship, Luther sophomore Cynthia Heck.

KWLC block party and hog roast

Join KWLC for a hog roast during a block party at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Bentdahl Commons. Enjoy a menu of build-your-own sandwich with roast hog or barbecue-roasted cauliflower, Hawaiian rolls, fresh pickles, mango slaw, baked beans, garden pasta salad, fresh watermelon, brownies, cookies, water and lemonade. Bands Bad Bad Hats and Driftwood Bones will perform. Rain location is in the Union, with food in the Caf and bands performing in Marty's. Faculty and staff can purchase tickets online for $7. Spring wildflower walk and garlic mustard pull

The community is invited to help pull the invasive garlic mustard from Luther's Lionberger Preserve. This preserve is rich in native spring wildflowers, but also threatened by invasive garlic mustard. The group will pull garlic mustard and do a wildflower walk from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7. Meet at the lower parking lot at Sampson Hoffland Labs. RSVP to Molly McNicoll <mcnimo01> for transportation planning purposes. All are welcome!

May community walk: Luther field day

The Luther community is invited to bring friends and family to a Luther field day and community walk, the closing event of "screen free week," 3:30-5 p.m. Sunday, May 7. The group will meet at the Decorah Public Swimming Pool lot at 3:30 p.m., where a healthy snack will be served. The group will walk to the Luther athletic fields, where children and adults can play football, volleyball and soccer with Luther athletes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 'Unleashing the Entrepreneur Within Us'

Award-winning media, e-commerce and cybersecurity entrepreneur Mohamed Amine Belarbi will deliver a lecture titled "Unleashing the Entrepreneur within Us" at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Olin 102. In his talk, Belarbi attempts to convey that entrepreneurship is a mindset and not an industry or skill-related ability. The lecture, which is open to the public with no charge for admission, is presented by the Luther Economics and Business Department and funded by the Dennis and Suzanne Birkestrand Chair in Economics and Business.

Senior recognition convocation: 

A celebration honoring all members of the class of 2017 will take place at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the CFL Main Hall. Students who have earned Latin honors, been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and honor societies in their major fields, received post-graduate awards and academic all-conference athletes will be honored at the ceremony. John Moeller, professor of political science, will give the address. The printed program will also contain senior paper/project titles. Following convocation, a group photo of the class of 2017 will be taken.

Documentary screening: Concepts of Media Production II subject documentaries

A collection of short subject documentary films produced by students enrolled in Concepts of Media Production II: The Documentary, a course taught by Thomas C. Johnson, will screen at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in Olin 102. The screening is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Administrative assistant: Luther seeks a .92 FTE, 11-month, administrative assistant to provide support to College Ministries. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of four years office experience as well as excellent organizational, problem solving and communication skills. A college degree, experience working in higher education or church office experience is preferred.

Coordinator of Diversity Recruitment: Admissions seeks a full-time coordinator of diversity recruitment. The coordinator will work with area programs serving under represented students and support diversity as well as assist in the recruitment and retention efforts for Luther. Must be willing to travel extensively and make public presentations. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and a positive driving record that will enable them to be insured through the college.

Security Officer: Full-time security officer to provide for the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. Officers perform multiple tasks, including random patrol of building and grounds on foot and by vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity and other conduct issues with an emphasis on prevention. The primary hours for this position will be 3:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m., or a combination of both. Scheduled hours will include weekends and holidays. A high school diploma or GED is required; some college is preferred.

The 32nd annual Luther College Entrepreneurial Showcase was held Tuesday, April 11, in Luther College's Peace Dining Room. This year, six student entrepreneurs were selected as finalists for the program and displayed their ventures during the networking session. Sophomore Jason Lewis received the grand prize of $5,000 for his company, Jim Bob's Painting. Senior Jackson VanKirk and sophomore Anna Helt won $2,500 as the runners up. Emily Schroeder, Belal Krayem and Kyle Livingood were finalists.

J. R. Christianson published "Tycho Brahe's Earliest Instruments," online in Renæssanceforum, volume 12.

Andy Hageman published in the "Los Angeles Review of Books" a review of the widely anticipated new novel, Borne, by Jeff VanderMeer.

Performance: The Oneota Valley Community Orchestra and the Decorah Chorale will join forces to perform Mozart's "Requiem" at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in the auditorium of Decorah High School.
