Luther baseball will host a game dedicated to raising money for children's cancer at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at home. The team would love members of the community to come out to show support and help spread awareness by wearing yellow. Donations and more information can be found online. All proceeds will be donated to the Vs. Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Don Kemp Memorial lecture: 'Social Workers Stand Up'

In honor of the life of social work faculty member Don Kemp, Luther will host Iowa Representative Mark Smith as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial lecture. In his talk, "Social Workers Stand Up," Smith will discuss the connection between social work and social policy, and how he has embodied this in his career as a social worker and elected official. The lecture, which is open to the public with no charge for admission, will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in Baker Commons.

Luther College Religion Forum series: 'Who Do You Trust'

The Luther College Religion Department will host Daniel A. Morris for a lecture as part of the "Who Do You Trust" Religion Forum Series. The lecture will take place at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 2, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. Morris's lecture, "Trusting a God of Justice: On Forgiveness and the Unarmed Black Man," questions the trustworthiness of law enforcement and the media in a time when the murders of innocent, unarmed black people have shocked the nation.

'Islam and Pre-emptive incarceration'

Human rights lawyer Kathy Manley will join Ikraan Abdurahmān and Mariam Abu-Ali, whose brothers were imprisoned under the auspices of terrorism-related investigations, to discuss their experiences with the U.S. justice system and the Patriot Act in a panel titled "Islam and Pre-emptive Incarceration" at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in Olin 102. The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms.

Spring opera performance: 'The Gondoliers' May 4-7

Featuring a cast of 35 talented students, "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert and Sullivan will be presented by the Luther College Music Department at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Jewel Theatre. Directed by Andrew Whitfield and Ed Andereck and conducted and accompanied by Nicholas Shaneyfelt, "The Gondoliers" follows a tale of royalty, marriage and misadventure.

Dancing with the Luther Stars

Three Luther faculty members paired with three students from the ballroom club go head to head in the annual "Dancing with the Luther Stars." Inspired by a popular ABC show, the event returns to bring excitement and friendly rivalry to campus at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in the CFL. The event is sponsored by Luther College Ballroom and Swing and SAC Special Events. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ticket Office.

This year's faculty members are Amanda Bailey, Luther head women's basketball coach, Joan deAlbuquerque, director of bands and associate professor of music and Kevin Wenger, Ylvisaker hall director. Bailey is partnered with Stephen Ster, Luther senior; deAlbuquerque is partnered with Joshua Weisenburger, Luther senior; Wenger is partnered with Jessica Skjonsby, Luther senior.

Film screening: '13th'

Just Action is hosting a screening of the thought-provoking documentary "13th" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in Valders 206. The documentary discusses the U.S. government's criminalization of African Americans, highlighting the context and current state of mass incarceration in the country. The film screening is open to the public with no charge for admission. Popcorn will be served free of charge, and a discussion will follow the film screening.

Student research symposium 

Luther will host the annual student research symposium Friday, May 5, with an opening convocation beginning at 9 a.m. in the Main Hall of the CFL. The day will include concurrent oral presentations and performances, complimentary dessert on Bentdahl Commons, a poster session and evening performances. The complete program can be found online.

Theatre performance: 'Becky Shaw'

Luther College's Visual and Performing Arts Department presents Gina Gionfriddo's "Becky Shaw," May 5-6 in Storre Theatre. After a blind date goes disastrously wrong, five characters must reevaluate their relationships with themselves and each other. Chaos, drama and heartbreak ensue. Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital: Cynthia Heck

Luther College will host the Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, in the NRH. An award ceremony and reception will follow the recital. The program and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission. The recital will feature the recipient of the scholarship, Luther sophomore Cynthia Heck.

KWLC block party and hog roast

Join KWLC for a hog roast during a block party at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Bentdahl Commons. Enjoy a menu of build-your-own sandwich with roast hog or barbecue-roasted cauliflower, Hawaiian rolls, fresh pickles, mango slaw, baked beans, garden pasta salad, fresh watermelon, brownies, cookies, water and lemonade. Bands Bad Bad Hats and Driftwood Bones will perform. Rain location is in the Union, with food in the Caf and bands performing in Marty's. Faculty and staff can purchase tickets online for $7. Spring wildflower walk and garlic mustard pull

The community is invited to help pull the invasive garlic mustard from Luther's Lionberger Preserve. This preserve is rich in native spring wildflowers, but also threatened by invasive garlic mustard. The group will pull garlic mustard and do a wildflower walk from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 7. May community walk: Luther field day

The Luther community is invited to bring friends and family to a Luther field day and community walk, the closing event of "screen free week," 3:30-5 p.m. Sunday, May 7. The group will meet at the Decorah Public Swimming Pool lot at 3:30 p.m., where a healthy snack will be served. The group will walk to the Luther athletic fields, where children and adults can play football, volleyball and soccer with Luther athletes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 'Unleashing the Entrepreneur Within Us'

Award-winning media, e-commerce and cybersecurity entrepreneur Mohamed Amine Belarbi will deliver a lecture titled "Unleashing the Entrepreneur within Us" at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Olin 102. In his talk, Belarbi attempts to convey that entrepreneurship is a mindset and not an industry or skill-related ability. The lecture, which is open to the public with no charge for admission, is presented by the Luther Economics and Business Department and funded by the Dennis and Suzanne Birkestrand Chair in Economics and Business.

Senior recognition convocation: 

A celebration honoring all members of the class of 2017 will take place at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the CFL Main Hall. Students who have earned Latin honors, been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and honor societies in their major fields, received post-graduate awards and academic all-conference athletes will be honored at the ceremony. John Moeller, professor of political science, will give the address. The printed program will also contain senior paper/project titles. Following convocation, a group photo of the class of 2017 will be taken.

Documentary screening: Concepts of Media Production II subject documentaries

A collection of short subject documentary films produced by students enrolled in Concepts of Media Production II: The Documentary, a course taught by Thomas C. Johnson, will screen at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in Olin 102. The screening is open to the public with no charge for admission.
