Weston Noble Celebration of Life service
Luther College will hold a celebration of life for Weston Noble at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The service will feature music by Nordic Choir and Concert Band under the direction of Andrew Last, Jennaya Robison and Joan de Albuquerque. The service will be streamed here. Andrew Last appointed conductor of Nordic Choir
Luther announces the appointment of Andrew Last, Luther class of 1997 and assistant professor of music, as conductor of Nordic Choir. Last will begin his new duties as director of choral activities at the beginning of the 2017 fall semester. Since 2012, Last has served as assistant professor of music at Luther, conducting Collegiate Chorale and Norsemen. He also teaches conducting and high school choral methods, and serves as camp director of Dorian Summer Music Camp. Under Last's direction, Collegiate Chorale was selected to sing at the regional American Choral Directors Association convention and the national ACDA convention in 2017.
January staff meeting
At this month's staff meeting, Mike Anderson will talk about Luther summer camps and programs, and Amy Wrightsman and Bob Harri will talk about ways to support workplace safety. The meeting will be offered twice: at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in Peace Dining Room. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.
Women's March events on campus and in Decorah
The Women's March - Driftless Style, sister march to the Women's March on Washington, will gather supporters of women's rights at Mary Christopher Park at on Saturday, Jan. 21, and end at the Courthouse. College Ministries is hosting a sign-making party at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Center for Faith and Life Room 205 to prepare for the march. They're also offering rides from campus to the Jan. 19 Community Sing at the Oneota Co-op at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to follow. Luther community members interested in the Thursday and Saturday events can contact Pastor Anne, <edisan01>, for more information.

CEPE faculty Research Fellowship: Call for Applications
The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites applications from any tenure-track faculty for a two-year Research Fellowship. The fellowship provides one course release per year to allow the fellow time to conduct academic research or discipline-specific work related to the annual theme of the CEPE. See the website for details and application instructions. Application deadline is Feb. 17.
Luther College Gardens growing a new legacy
The Luther College Gardens are a great place for students to learn about vegetable production. During the 2016 season Luther students grew and sold 6,300 pounds of produce worth more than $11,000 to Luther's Dining Services for use in the cafeteria, catering events and Oneota Market. At the same time, the Luther Gardens became the first liberal arts college garden in the country to be USDA Good Agricultural Practices certified for food safety practices.

Baseball third annual First Pitch Banquet
Luther Baseball's third annual First Pitch Banquet is Saturday, Feb. 25, with social hour starting at 5:30 p.m. and dinner starting at 6:30 p.m. This year's guest speaker will be 1985 graduate, Jay Kamin. Tickets can be purchased online.
Employee wellness spring class registration
Register for wellness classes that begin the week of Feb. 6 and run for six weeks. All activities will be held in the CFA Studio 2. The cost is $24 for each six-week session and is open to current employees and spouses. To register, please email <wellness>. Price increase on stamps
The cost of a first class postage stamp will increase from 47 cents to 49 cents effective Sunday, Jan. 22. Email Deb, <karrdebb>, in the Book Shop if you would like to place a stamp order before Jan. 18.
Food waste pulper installed
Over break a food waste pulper was installed in the cafeteria dish room through a generous award from the Iowa DNR Solid Waste Alternatives Program. Luther had previously diverted approximately 450 pounds of fruits, vegetables and grains per day for composting. The pulper allows all food scraps, including meat and dairy, to be converted into easily compostable material, potentially eliminating up to 100 tons of food waste from entering the landfill over a year's time.

Two new faculty stories feature anthropology faculty Maryna Bazylevych, who talks about being nurtured at Luther as both a teacher and a scholar, and Anita Carrasco, who discusses her fieldwork with women in Chile's Atacama desert.
Current senior Jillian Hazlett, a psychology major, discusses research that she has been involved with over the past year: "I'm working with data collected in Haiti, examining variables of trauma, direct and indirect victimization, forgiveness, and the presence and search for life meaning."

Free Friday morning open gym
Parents and their children (0-5 years old) are invited to come burn off energy Fridays in January (20 and 27) from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at an open gym inside Luther's North Gym indoor track area. There is no admission fee, and balls, scooters, etc. are provided. A parent/guardian must stay to supervise their child(ren). Presidential Inauguration live screening
Jan. 20 marks the end of President Barack Obama's service as President of the United States, and the beginning of President elect Donald Trump's term in office. The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement will host a live screening of the inauguration, which is scheduled to air at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20 in the CFL Recital Hall. Doors will open at 10:45 a.m. and a reception with refreshments will follow. The event and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
SAC Spotlight: Tyler Boeh
SAC Spotlight proudly presents comedian, Tyler Boeh, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in Marty's. Tickets are $5 at the door. Boeh is establishing himself at the top clubs in Hollywood. Whether he is on the small stage of an intimate comedy club or performing at a theater, Boeh is comfortable, confident and hilarious. He uses his quick wit and celebrated talent of beatboxing to bring audiences to hysterical heights.
J-term opera scenes performance
This January, several first-year students are taking advantage of an opportunity to get a small peek into the world of opera. Students auditioned to have a role in the 2017 January Term opera scenes performance and are being immersed in the art form for the entirety of J-term. The course culminates in a performance at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the NRH. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Mid-Winter Community Day
Luther College invites alumni, parents and friends of the college to enjoy a full day of food, fellowship, fun and sports at the 2017 Mid-Winter Community Day beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, in the Regents Center. Registration for Mid-Winter Community Day is required and can be completed online or by calling the Alumni Office, 387-1164 or (800) 225-8664. The community day pizza party is $2 for adults, no charge for Luther students and children 18 and under. There is no charge for admission to Mid-Winter Community Day sporting events.

Director of legacy and gift planning: The ideal candidate will serve as chief strategist for gift planning, offering leadership, vision and direction. The director will be charged with expanding the existing vehicles and practices through which Luther can generate deferred support for institutional priorities. They will serve as philanthropic advisor to potential donors and work alongside colleagues to craft creative giving options tailored to individual circumstances of each donor. This position reports directly to the director of development. Moderate travel is required. The ideal candidate will bring comprehensive knowledge working with the fundamental dimensions of financial and estate planning and deferred giving, including tax and estate planning laws that impact charitable giving and personal planning. Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three years of experience in fundraising, legal or financial work related to gift planning is required.
Alumni records assistant: The position will be responsible for updating demographic information for our constituents, entering all deposited student applications and their parent information, managing the Online Alumni Directory with Information Technology Services, assisting with alumni event registrations and Homecoming, scanning constituent information and answering the phone. This position calls for the ability to multi-task along with strong attention to detail and organizational skills. The candidate must also possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. High school diploma and at least one year of office related experience required. Knowledge of database maintenance and Microsoft Word and Excel computer programs preferred.

Kimberly Osberg '14, and Maxwell Lafontant '13, both former Luther music composition students, created the Libera Composer's Association Consortium, a group of rotating composers and Luther alumni, who write new works for different public school ensembles over the course of LCA's season.
