President Emeritus Elwin D. Farwell, 1919-2017
The Luther College community is mourning the passing of President Emeritus Elwin Farwell, who died at home in Decorah on Friday, May 5. President Farwell was Luther's sixth president, serving from 1963 to 1981, during a time of great change for the college and the nation. On behalf of the Luther community, I extend our prayers and sympathy to President Farwell's family and to the many, many friends and loved ones who mourn his passing.
President Farwell was a kind and gracious man who loved Luther College. He transformed the college during his nearly twenty years as president, and the Luther community is forever grateful for his visionary leadership.
Thanks be to God for the life and vocation of Elwin Farwell.

Celebration of Life for Weston Noble
Luther College will hold a celebration of life for Weston Noble at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the CFL Main Hall. The service is open to the public with general admission seating; tickets will not be issued for this event. The service will also be streamed live on the Luther website.
Those planning to attend the service are asked to fill out the RSVP form to help college staff prepare for the number of guests. For more information, visit luther.edu/weston.

Board of Regents meets this week
The Regents will meet on campus Friday and Saturday, May 12-13. To view the "Spring 2017 Report to the Board of Regents," search for "Regents" in the Search Courses box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accept.
College Senior Survey
The College Senior Survey provides evidence of change in many areas over Luther students' college careers, including goals and views, time spent on various activities, self-rating on academic skills, and practices related to Luther's learning goals. For the 2016 seniors, who were first-year students in 2012:
- Developing a meaningful philosophy of life was considered "essential" or "very important" to 47% as first-years, but 66% by the time they were seniors
- Students' perceptions of their academic ability declined, computer skills increased, and writing ability was unchanged
- Nearly 20% of students agreed with the statement "racial discrimination is no longer a major problem in America" as first-years, but that number was below 3% agreeing as seniors
- "Frequently" integrating skills and knowledge from different sources and experiences increased from 62% of entering first-years to 81% of seniors

Admissions report available via KATIE
The monthly admissions report is now available in KATIE. Luther faculty and staff can access the report via KATIE approximately one week after the end of each month. To view the report, search for "enrollment data" in the Search Courses box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accept.
Parking restrictions for May 12-13
In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for the celebration of life for Weston Noble on Saturday, May 13, the following parking restrictions will go into effect at 8 p.m. Friday, May 12, and will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, May 13.
The general parking areas of the Library, Jenson-Noble and City Pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the Library and Jenson-Noble lots provided they move by 8 p.m. Friday, unless attending the service.
Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, May 12, the lots on the east and west sides of the CFL will be designated for persons with disabled parking permits only.
Due to the volume of visitors, Luther faculty and staff who plan to attend the service are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to campus.
The community's cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fines. Any questions may be directed to Campus Safety and Security, 387-2111.
Strategic planning open forums
The Strategic Planning Committee will hold one more round of open forums this semester. All faculty, staff and students are invited and encouraged to attend to discuss ideas and initiatives that have emerged through the Strategic Planning Committee's information-gathering activities. This is an important opportunity to help the committee develop and shape goals and priorities for Luther's future.

Staff meeting May 15
A special monthly staff meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, in Peace Dining Room. The strategic planning committee has requested this meeting to allow for a time of discussion regarding emerging ideas. This will include the opportunity for small group conversations. The voices of staff are considered vital to the success of this project. Please plan to attend.
Move out mindfully: donate, recycle, divert

Desserts in Decorah hosts needed
The Luther community is invited to get involved with a fun orientation tradition. The Student Life office is looking for local faculty, staff and alumni to host small groups of students for "Desserts in Decorah" from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 29. Hosts need only provide a dessert, a gathering place and an enthusiastic welcome to new Luther students. Consider co-hosting with a friend, neighbor or colleague. Fiscal year end approaching
Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 9, to be included in fiscal year 2016-17 budget. No faxed copies are permitted. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 2. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.
Library books due May 12
The due date for books checked out from the main stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 7, are due by Friday, May 12. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by emailing <library>. If renewed, the new due date for books is Dec. 8, the last day of 2017 fall semester classes. Books that have been renewed three times in two years will not be renewed again. These books must be physically checked in and checked out again. Faculty and staff can view their accounts online by clicking "library account."
Seeking friendship families
The Luther Diversity Center seeks individuals and families in the Decorah community to help incoming international students adjust to life at Luther and in the United States. The goal of the program is to promote international understanding and develop an appreciation of how others live and view the world. Interested individuals and families can sign up on the Diversity Center website.
Shuttle Service now offering Chicago Midway International Airport
The 2017-18 shuttle schedule is now available online. This fall, the Chicago Midway Airport will be a new pick-up and drop-off location along with minor changes for continuing routes. As a reminder, all shuttle tickets must be purchased a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the initial departure time or there will be an additional handling fee.
Not Quite Free Lunch for employees May 9
Tuesday, May 9, join Wellness for the final NQFL for Luther employees. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. Come enjoy a meal anytime 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in the Nobel Room. The charge is just $5 (cash, check or Luther ID). Includes main course options, sides and dessert. Winneshiek County housing survey
Winneshiek County is conducting a housing study to better understand the current status of housing in our area. The goal of the housing study is to generate actions for the future that will overcome challenges and take advantage of opportunities. This survey is open to all Winneshiek County residents and is also for Winneshiek County workers who live in other counties. The survey is available online.

Senior recognition convocation:
A celebration honoring all members of the class of 2017 will take place at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the CFL Main Hall. Students who have earned Latin honors, been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and honor societies in their major fields, received post-graduate awards and academic all-conference athletes will be honored at the ceremony. John Moeller, professor of political science, will give the address. The printed program will also contain senior paper/project titles. Following convocation, a group photo of the class of 2017 will be taken.
Farewell and Godspeed for faculty and staff
Campus Ministries invites the community to honor departing and retiring faculty and staff in chapel at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, with prayers of godspeed and farewell. There will be a brief reception in the CFL lobby after chapel for those who are able to stay.
World premiere of the movie 'Die Schnitzeljagd'
The students of German 344 present their original German-language film, "Die Schnitzeljagd," ("The Scavenger Hunt") 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, in Valders 206. The film covers the story of a scavenger hunt at Luther College that turns into a search for a missing professor. The film screening is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Documentary screening: Concepts of Media Production II subject documentaries
A collection of short subject documentary films produced by students enrolled in Concepts of Media Production II: The Documentary, a course taught by Thomas C. Johnson, will screen at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, May 11, in Olin 102. The screening is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Make America Great Again - Bring Back the Buffalo'
Luther professor emeritus Dave Roslien will give a lecture titled "Make America Great Again– Bring Back the Buffalo" at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 11, in the Mott Room. Roslien's lecture focuses on the American Bison, an iconic American species that the U.S. Congress designated as the national mammal of the United States in 2016.
Senior art majors exhibit May 12-21
As the culmination of their studies in the fine arts, Luther senior art majors present a gallery exhibit of their collective works May 12-21 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA. A reception for the student artists will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the Center for the Arts. Both the exhibit and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission. Exhibiting artists in this year's show are seniors Makeda Barkley, Adam Bartucci, Jayna Felder, Claire Firary, Max Green, Spencer Hodge, Savannah Horn, Miranda Joslin, Blake Klein, Josh Miller, Nathan Moore and Shannon Taylor.
Mother's Day Peace Brunch
Join catering for a Mother's Day Peace Brunch buffet in Peace Dining Room from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 14. A variety of breakfast items will be served including fresh fruit, cheese, local eggs, bacon and sausage, an assortment of cheesecakes, fresh pies, gourmet cupcakes, desserts and much more. Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir showcase concert
The Luther College Symphony Orchestra and the Nordic Choir will present a spring showcase concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 19, in the Main Hall of the CFL. The Symphony Orchestra will perform a program featuring "Huapango" by José Pablo Moncayo, "Adagietto," from Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler and "Boléro" by Maurice Ravel. The Nordic Choir will present a program featuring pieces by Charles Woods, J.A.C. Redford, Daniel Elder and more.
Baccalaureate Vespers
A celebration and sending for the class of 2017 will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 20, in the Main Hall of the CFL. The celebratory worship service includes hymns, choir anthems, prayers and blessing for graduates and their families. Rooted in the college's Lutheran Christian heritage and our confidence in God's care for all people of the earth, this ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class.
Save the date: James Fallows to give Farwell Distinguished Lecture Oct. 10
Award-winning journalist and author James Fallows will give the Farwell Distinguished Lecture Oct. 10. His talk, "It's happening here: American Renewal, Ingenuity, and Innovation", is the result of a three-year, 54,000 mile journey across the country and reports on how America is putting itself back together in the wake of recession and division. He found a wide range of civic projects underway that are rebuilding America - a cross-section of generations, races and political affiliations working far from the usual metropolitan hubs.;

Administrative assistant: .75 FTE, six hour per day, benefit-eligible, administrative assistant in the Office for Financial Services. The administrative assistant provides customer service to parents, students, staff and other customers of Luther in person, by phone and mail. This person will also be responsible for maintaining confidential information and performing clerical duties as needed. High school diploma is required, degree in business from a community college preferred. Two years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
Associate athletic trainer: .83 FTE, ten-month (August-May) associate athletic trainer to assist the head athletic trainer with responsibilities of managing the athletic training services with the understanding of current NCAA DIII and NATA policies and procedures. Position includes teaching nutrition class. Required qualifications include BOC certification, eligibility for Iowa Athletic Training Licensure, minimum of two years collegiate athletic training experience and master's degree in Athletic Training or related field. CRP/AED professional rescuer certification is preferred.
Administrative assistant: Luther seeks a .92 FTE, 11-month, administrative assistant to provide support to College Ministries. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of four years office experience as well as excellent organizational, problem solving and communication skills. A college degree, experience working in higher education or church office experience is preferred.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
On Friday, April 28, two students won awards at the Iowa Sociological Association annual meeting and conference hosted by Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Senior Cade Bolen's paper, "Labeling and Stigmatization in Drug Addition: How Labels Influence Our Perceptions" won best paper in the criminology category. Sophomore Madie Miller won first place in the Sociologically Imaginative Pictures competition. Also presenting were seniors Jacq Congello, Branna Elenz, Mic Farrin, Aracelli Garcia and Ryan Thorson. Students in attendance included juniors YLee Cook, Kate Larson, Carla Ramirez and Melissa Young and sophomore Isabel Solano; Faculty in attendance included Ron Ferguson, Joseph Kramer and Char Kunkel.
Jacq Congello '17, Ron Ferguson and Char Kunkel presented their work on racial attitudes and actions titled, "At the Crossroads: Persistence or Transformation?" at the Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting April 2 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The research was supported by the Cargill Foundation.
Char Kunkel and Amanda Lindberg Aganga '03, criminal defense attorney, presented a workshop at the University of Idaho on April 13-15 for the law school and social justice programs on racism in the criminal justice system. They were hosted by Kristin Haltinner '03, University of Idaho sociology professor.
Holly Moore presented her paper, "Platonic Epagōgē and the 'Purification' of the Method of Collection," at the American Philosophical Association Western Division meeting in Seattle on April 14. She was also selected to participate in a workshop at the APA, "Mentoring the Mentors," aimed at improving mentorship of students traditionally underrepresented in the discipline of philosophy.
Senior Kyla Grau is the 2017 recipient of the Gilman Scholarship. The honor carries an award of $3,000. The Gilman Scholarship gives students the opportunity to study abroad and gain skills critical to national security and economic competitiveness. The program's goal is to encourage students to "study and intern in a diverse array of countries and world regions." It also encourages the study of critically needed languages.
Molly Wilker received a grant from the Monticello College Foundation to fund a faculty/student collaborative project focused on the development of a chemistry outreach program that aims to encourage young women to pursue careers in the sciences. The Monticello College Foundation supports the furthering of women's education.
Brad Chamberlain was named a 2017-18 Thrivent Fellow. Sponsored by the Lutheran Educational Conference of North America, Thrivent Financial, the Concordia University System of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and the Congregational and Synodical Mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Thrivent Fellows program is a 12-month executive fellowship aimed at developing the leadership capacity of the colleges and universities of the Lutheran Church.
Luther alumnus Hans Becklin has been selected by the Lutheran Historical Society of the Mid-Atlantic to receive the 2016 A.R. Wentz Prize in American Lutheran History. Becklin was selected for his paper titled "Herbjorn Gausta's Good Shepherd (1895) at First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa: Printed American Visual Culture as Painted Norwegian-American Propaganda."
