September staff meeting
Meet new staff and learn about Title IX reporting requirements from Matt Bills at this month's staff meeting. Renae Hartl will talk about new athletic facilities and Luther's partnership with Nike. The meeting will be offered twice: at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in Peace Dining Room. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.
2016 Fall Semester Enrollment
- Student enrollment is 2,169
- Our new registered student total is 547 (520 first-year students, 27 transfer students).
- U.S. Students of Color total 236 (10.9% of total enrollment), and International students total 143 (6.6% of total enrollment).
- Thirty-eight states (includes Iowa) and 69 countries (includes U.S.) are represented in our total enrollment.
- Student enrollment full-time equivalent (FTE) using the Common Data Set definition, also used for calculating workforce ratios, (full-time + 1/3 part-time), is 2,144.
- Forty-one percent of our total enrollment report Lutheran as their religious affiliation.
- First-year to second-year persistence for the 2015 first-year student cohort is 84.1%, first-year to third-year persistence for the 2014 first-year student cohort is 81.4%, and first-year to fourth-year persistence for the 2013 first-year cohort is 79.9%.

Preus Library and the Student Senate have teamed up to provide all students, faculty and staff complimentary access to NYTimes.com and NYT mobile apps. Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System
Over the course of the year the Center for Sustainable Communities will be collecting information from offices across campus as part of our next STARS, or Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System, Report. We plan to submit next summer. This is our third time completing this comprehensive report as an institution. Thanks in advance for your willingness to collaborate in providing information to feed into this process.
Gift to Luther College archive
The Preus Library archive now has volume two of "Professional Activity from 2004-2015 by Richard G. Cole, Emeritus Professor of History." This bound volume has copies of book reviews, journal articles, chapters in books and citations of Cole's work by other authors. The archive also contains volume one, which includes copies of Cole's printed materials from 1966-2000. For questions about accessibility of these volumes contact Hayley R. New fitness classes for employees
Tone Zone will be held from 11:30 a.m.-12:05 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Body Blast will be held from 6:30-7:15 a.m. on Wednesdays. Both classes are held in the Regent's Center Dance Studio. No registration required. Come join us!
Wellness sponsored reading
As wellness launches their 2016-2017 Mindfulness campaign they invite you to stimulate your wellbeing with the first sponsored reading of the year. We are reading "Life is a Verb: 37 Days to Wake Up, Be Mindful, and Live Intentionally." Email wellness, <wellness> if you would like to join us in reading. Call for recommendations for summer reading
Thanks to everyone who made the summer reading and Karen Joy Fowler's visit such a positive event. Now, what should we read for summer 2017? Star Trek 50th anniversary event
The original "Star Trek" television series premiered Sept. 8, 1966. The provocatively diverse crew explored worlds, peoples and ideas that mashed up Shakespeare and Plato with pulp science fiction tropes, cardboard sets and the thespianism of William Shatner.
An event will be held in honor of 50 years of "Star Trek" at Luther College in early November. Fans, critics, lovers and haters of "Trek" are invited to give a 5-10 minute talk on their relationship to the show. Whether it be the original series, later series, movies or spoofs like "Galaxy Quest", members of the community are invited to speak and to show one short clip. On the Alumni Profiles page, Victoria Ewald '14 says it was her pyschology major at Luther that put her on the path to a Ph.D. in neuroscience. At the University of Iowa, she is studying neural pathways in the brain that influence relapse in cocaine addiction.
Current student Alexis Hove '18, majoring in Nordic studies and art, talks about the interdisciplinary experience at Luther and her unique combination of study interests.

Guest Lectures: Doug Tallamy
Doug Tallamy, professor of entomology and wildlife at the University of Delware, will give two lectures, both at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, and Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Valders Room 206. His lectures focus on specialized relationships between animals and plants and native landscaping to create a biodiverse-rich yard that promotes these relationships. Both lectures are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Guest Recital: Eric High, contrabass trombone
Trombonist Eric High will perform a guest recital on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the NRH. High is assistant professor of music at St. Norbert College and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Local political forum at Luther College Sept. 22
A forum for state and local candidates will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 in Valders 206. Candidates for Iowa Senate District 28, Iowa House District 55 and the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors Districts three, four and five will participate in two separate sessions. The forum is sponsored by the Decorah chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Luther College Political Science and Social Work Departments. Faculty Artist Series: Andrew Whitfield
Featuring a variety of works from the opera, art song and chamber music repertoire, Associate Professor of Music Andrew Whitfield will perform a vocal recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in the NRH. The program features works by Mozart, Beethoven, and more. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Erik Larson to give Distinguished Lecture
Best-selling nonfiction author Erik Larson will deliver the fall 2016 Luther College Distinguished Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the CFL Main Hall. The New York Times described Larson as "one of the modern masters of popular narrative non-fiction… adept at rescuing weird and wonderful gothic tales from the shadows of history." Larson's talk is open to the public with no charge for admission and will be followed by a book signing in the CFL lobby.
Luther College Writers Festival Sept. 23-24
Critically-acclaimed authors Erik Larson, Bret Anthony Johnston and Jane Hamilton are the featured speakers at the 2016 Luther College Writers Festival, Sept. 23-24, on the Luther campus. Conference registration and a full schedule of events is available online.
More than 25 contemporary writers of fiction, poetry and nonfiction will read their work, participate in panel discussions and be available for discussion and book signings throughout the conference. Local authors Carol Gilbertson, Charlie Langton, June Melby and Amy Weldon will read from their work and Decorah visual artists David Kamm and John Hall will discuss the relationship between image and text.
Community Day 2016
Faculty, staff and their families are invited to enjoy a day of food, fellowship and fun at the Fall Community Day Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Regents Center, sponsored by the Alumni Office and Decorah Bank and Trust. Registration is required. The picnic BBQ costs $6 per adult, kids eat free. Parents can reserve free "Welcome to the Valley!" game pass t-shirts for their children. Shirts must be picked up at the picnic. The Luther Cheer Squad will give away Norse tattoos and the Norse Baseball team will host activities and games for kids. Faculty Artist Series: Luther College Piano Quartet
The Luther College Piano Quartet will present a recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. The Luther College Piano Quartet features Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; Philip Borter, cello; and Miko Kominami, piano. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission and will feature works by Mozart, Brahms and Richard Strauss.
Luther College blood drive
Luther College is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 26, and noon-6 p.m. on Sept. 27 in Brunsdale Lounge between Miller and Dieseth Halls. Volunteers from the sponsoring organization, Alpha Phi Omega, will be tabling in the Union basement by Marty's from noon-1p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Sept. 12-16 and 19-23. Book signing
Luther Book Shop will host a book signing with writer Jerry Johnson on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2:30–4 p.m., during Homecoming Weekend. Johnson, retired director of public information, will sign copies of his new book "Ivory and Gold," a historical novel based on the slave trade in East Africa at the turn of the 19th century. Copies of his four previously published books will also be available.
Phi Beta Kappa Symposium on the Liberal Arts
The Luther College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is hosting a Homecoming Symposium at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in the CFL Recital Hall. Gracia Grindal, professor emerita of rhetoric at Luther Seminary, will present "Ironies and Surprises: The Legacies of Linka Preus and Elisabeth Koren." Grindal's new book, "Unstoppable: The Norwegian Pioneers Educate their Daughters," relies heavily on sources related to Linka Preus and Elisabeth Koren in the Luther College Archives. The Symposium, with a reception to follow, is open to the community with no charge for admission.
Center Stage Series: "Aca-Perfect"
From the creative mind behind "Pitch Perfect" and "The Sing-Off" comes a performance that takes a cappella to a whole new level. Luther College Center Stage Series presents Vocalosity's "The Aca-Perfect Concert Experience" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. "The Luther community is devastated by this loss and continues to pray for Bjorn's family. We ask that the community come together and support one another in this difficult time," said Luther President Paula Carlson.
To the family and friends of Christina Moorcroft, who passed away Monday, Sept. 19. Chris was a member of the accounting faculty from 1982 through 2001. She also served as the college accountant from 1978 to 1982. We mourn her death and reflect on the impact she had on the accounting program and many, many accounting majors. Chris is survived by her husband, Bill, emeriti professor of psychology; children, Marcy, Pat and Drew '94; and eight grandchildren. Marv Slind's review of "Across the Deep Blue Sea: The Saga of Early Norwegian Immigrants from Norway to America through the Canadian Gateway," by Odd S. Lovoll, appeared in South Dakota History (Vol. 46, No. 2, Summer 2016).
Loren Toussaint contributed to the SAGE Publisher's Psychology Video Collection. The video covers the methodological and statistical methods used in the study of forgiveness, stress, and health. SAGE videos are meant for college student use and are available on a wide range of topics in psychology and other disciplines.
