2013 FICA tax withholding rate

Information available from the IRS since the 1/2/13 biweekly payroll was processed indicates the 2013 FICA tax withholding rate will return to the pre-2011 rate of 6.2 percent of taxable income. Because 6.2 percent FICA tax was withheld on taxable income for the 1/2/13 payroll, no adjustment will be necessary on future payrolls to correct this withholding. If you have any questions regarding the 2013 FICA tax withholding rate, please contact Mary in the payroll office, 387-1135. 

Flu shots available

Health Service has flu shots available and are now accepting spouses/significant others as patients; cost is $25. Contact Pamela at Health Service, 387-1045, with questions.

Dorian Vocal Festival meal times affect cafeteria

The 2013 Dorian Vocal Festival will take place this weekend. Most Festival activities will take place in the CFL, but large groups of Dorian students will be eating in the cafeteria and Marty's on Sunday between 4:45-6 p.m. and Monday, 7-9 a.m., 12:30-1:30 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. 850 guests will also be staying overnight Sunday in all of the dorms.

BREATHE

Take time to breathe during J-term. Wellness and College Ministries are sponsoring a wellness initiative that encourages you to take a total of 20 minutes during the day to relax. Attend chapel, take a walk, eat lunch with a friend or read a book are a few examples. During J-term do this 12 times and receive a $15 Book Store gift card. If you are already doing this make six of these activities a new pattern. There are Breathe cards available in departments around campus, or in the Wellness or College Ministries Office to log your activity.

Staff broomball league

Staff broomball league. The pond is ready for some friendly games twice a week over the noon hour. Come play! For more information Vicky Jaeger <jaegervi> soon as we want to start.

Luther Soccer Winter Skills Clinic

The Luther College men's and women's soccer programs will be offering a Winter Skills Clinic on three consecutive Sunday afternoons: Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10. Cost is $55 and includes a t-shirt.

Luther's Student Support Services Program is pleased to share its

Sign up for W-2's online

Sign up for W-2's online. It is easy to do. For instructions and more information, go to hr.luther.edu. Go to "Forms for Faculty and Staff" and under Tax Forms choose W-2 2012 Options. (Mac users: please do not use the "preview" application to view your W-2.) If you chose the electronic option for your 2011 W-2 you do not need to do it again for 2012. Go to "W-2 electronic consent" under Employee Profile at my.luther.edu to see which option you chose for 2011. Remember - the electronic option is the sustainable option.

J-term provides an opportunity for new patterns and some space for reflection. Come explore faith through word and song on Mondays, in silent meditation on Wednesdays, and through movement on Fridays. This J-term, listen to God's call to "be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

Poet Athena Kildegaard to teach, give poetry reading

Poet Athena Kildegaard, a lecturer at the University of Minnesota, Morris, will share her remarkable poems in a reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The reading is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Kildegaard, who will teach at Luther in January, wrote a love poem every day for a year. That labor of love resulted in her recent book, "Cloves & Honey." In her first book, "Rare Momentum," the poet composed 62 Fibonaccis, formal poems based on the mathematical sequence of the same name.

Football coach candidate open forum Jan. 11

The campus community is invited to meet a candidate for the head football coaching position at Luther College. There will be an open forum with Tim Camp, head football coach at Eastern Oregon State University from 2:15-3:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 in Room 224 of the Regents Center.

Theatre program hosts two play readings

The Luther Theatre program is hosting two play readings of original works at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. Both are scheduled for studio two of the CFA and there is no admission fee.

The Friday reading features Luther alum Pat Strain's play, "Stained Glass," which focuses on a congregation facing issues that could tear apart the fabric of the community.

Saturday morning the reading features a musical "Windy Wildwood" that examines the journey of 13-year-old Windy as she seeks answers to troubling questions. The musical features lyrics from the band Evanescence. The author is Robert Frie, a health system analyst for the Mayo Clinic. 

SAC Spotlight: Jeffrey James Jan. 11

Jeffrey James, featured on Season 3 of NBC's "The Voice," will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 in Marty's CyberCafé. Tickets are $5, available at the Luther Box Office, open Monday-Friday, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; extended hours Thursdays: open until 7 p.m. The concert is sponsored by Luther's Student Activities Council: Spotlight committee.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

To forgive freely is to live longer? That may be so according to
research by Loren Toussaint. An article in the January issue of
Psychology Today (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/fulfillment-any-age/201301/live-longer-practicing-forgiveness)
explains how Toussaint and his research team investigated
relationships among forgiveness, religiousness, spirituality, health
and mortality in a sample of 1,500 adults age 66 and older.

Richard G. Cole, emeritus professor of history, has a newly published article: "The Art of History and Eighteenth-Century Information Management: Christian Gottlieb Joecher and Johann Heinrich Zedler"  in The Library Quarterly, Vol. 83, No.1 (January 2013), pp. 26-38. The article was published by the University of Chicago Press. Much of the information in the article was extracted from 260 year old biographical lexicons stored in the dark  Depot of Preus library. Thanks to the library staff, Kathy, Lindy and Eddy and the computer center for all their help.

Maryna Bazylevych won the 2012 Society for Medical Anthropology's Steven Polgar paper prize for the best publication in Medical Anthropology Quarterly in 2011 for "Vaccination Campaigns in Post-Socialist Ukraine. When Body Politic and Citizens’ Bodies Intersect" in Medical Anthropology Quarterly 25(4):436-456.

Marv Slind's review of "Land of Promise, Land of Tears," by Jerry L. Twedt, was published in The Annals of Iowa, Volume 72, Number 1 (Winter 2013).

Luther College recently received a $19,500 grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. The grant enables the college to conduct a series of focus groups, called "listening posts," in cities throughout the United States to gather firsthand feedback from key constituents regarding Luther's recent comprehensive campaign and future efforts to strengthen a culture of philanthropy.
