Presidential finalists

The presidential search committee is pleased to announce that finalist Dr. Mark. R. Hagerott and his wife Mrs. Ann Hagerott will be on campus Feb. 5-7, and finalist Dr. Ann Hill Duin '77 and her husband the Rev. Doug Duin '77 will be on campus Feb. 10-12. Candidate files and visit schedules are available for viewing on Katie. Click "Show all Courses" on the myCourses block, scroll down and click "Candidate Searches." The files are within the folder named "President-2012."

Faculty, staff and emeriti are encouraged to attend an open candidate forum with each finalist. There are two opportunities so that as many people as possible can participate. Forums for Dr. Hagerott will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 2-3:15 and 4-5:15 p.m. in Valders 206. Forums for Dr. Duin will be held Monday, Feb. 11, from 2-3:15 and 4-5:15 p.m. in Valders 206.  

Electronic W-2s now available 

Electronic W-2s are now available and ready to print for employees who chose to receive electronic W-2s. Log into my.luther.edu. In the "Employee Profile" section, click on "W-2 Statements." A page showing W-2 Statements will appear. Click the 2012 link in the tax year box and the W-2 for calendar year 2012 will show on screen, ready to print.

Open forum for third finalist for Director of Facilities Services

From 2:45-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, Steven Guenther will speak at an open forum for the campus community. The forum will be held in Hammarskjold Lounger in the Union.

Aquatic Center construction update

Construction is progressing on schedule for the Aquatic Center. The roof and windows have all been installed and progress is being made on the concrete foundation for the pool structure. The Mrytha vinyl covered stainless steel panels have arrived from Italy and are waiting to be installed. The walls and ceilings of the natatorium have been painted. We expect completion of the pool in late May.

Health care notice

Luther dependent children are no longer eligible to receive well-child vaccinations at Winneshiek County Public Health due to a change in their policy. Adults continue to be eligible for routine vaccinations such as TDAP, Hepatitis B, flu, and pneumonia, at their previous rates. Be assured that the Luther health care council is discussing plan option changes.

Flu shots available

Health Service has flu shots available and are now accepting spouses/significant others as patients; cost is $25. Contact Pamela at Health Service, 387-1045, with questions.

Streaming video changes for spring 2013

Due to the upcoming changes to KATIE, all streaming video for spring 2013 will need to be re-linked online in order for the video to work properly. Those who are using or planning to use streaming video should contact the LIS Technology Help Desk to have this corrected or enter a self service ticket at https://help.luther.edu/.

J-term class to offer public reading of Milton poem Jan. 22

Starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22 members of English 363 will give a reading of Milton's epic poem, "Paradise Lost." The reading will take place by the fireplace in the Union. Travel to the fiery lake with Satan and his infernal companions, visit with the Holy Light of Heaven and check out what life in Eden was like for our First Parents... hint: think blissful. All are welcome.

Loren Toussaint will be the featured expert on "At Issue with Ben Merens" a radio program on Wisconsin Public Radio Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. For more on the program see: http://wpr.org/merens/. Exhibit of Norwegian South Pole Expedition on display until Jan. 23

24 large-format fabric posters of Roald Amundsen's (1872-1928) Norwegian South Pole Expedition will be on display in the Center for Faith and Life until Jan. 23. The posters feature images taken by Amundsen and used during his presentation to the Royal Geographic Society in London on Nov. 15, 1912. This exhibit is sponsored by the Fram Museum in Oslo and by the Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C.  

School performance series presents 'Zorro' Jan. 24

A mysterious figure has arrived in town with the flurry of a cape, glint of a sword and flash of a mask; who is this shadowy character? Luther College's School Performance Series is pleased to present two performances of Zorro at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

Thanks to kid-friendly sponsorship from Winneshiek Medical Center and Physician Services by Mayo Clinic Health System, tickets are only $2, available at the Luther College Box Office.

Emotion in Motion: Moving Through Mozart & America Jan. 24

Luther first-year students will be performing scenes from the beloved operas of Mozart and the modern American operatic repertoire at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24 in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance will be directed by Dr. Rachel Ware and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

From 11-11:50 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25 students from several math and science courses will host a poster session highlighting their J-term experiences. The presentation will take place in Sampson-Hoffland. All are invited to attend.

Labyrinth walk Jan. 25

Luther’s canvas labyrinth will be available to walk through in the CFL Main Hall from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Jan. 25. There will be a brief orientation at the beginning for those who come at 10:30 a.m. The labyrinth will be available the remaining time with handouts to provide brief background and notes about the labyrinth as a spiritual practice. Alumna to give Spring Convocation Address Jan. 31

Luther College alumna Vanessa (Grima Baldacchino) Frazier, Malta's ambassador to Belgium, will present the college's Spring Convocation Address at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. Ambassador Frazier will talk about the lessons she learned at Luther, her experiences since graduating and her work during the Arab Spring uprisings.

Marv Slind's review of "Organizing History: Studies in Honour of Jan Glete," by Maria Forssberg, Mats Hallenberg, Orsi Husz and Jonas Nordin was published in "Scandinavian Studies," Vol. 84, No. 2 (Summer 2012).

An article published Dec. 1 by Norwegian newspaper Vardens profiles Luther visiting instructor of Scandinavian studies Kari Grønningsæter and Øyvind Gulliksen as well as Luther's Norwegian language and Scandinavian studies departments.

Timed to coincide with the United States Presidential inauguration, Philip Freeman's book "How to Run a Country: An Ancient Guide for Modern Leaders" will be released Jan. 22. In this book, Freeman translates the political wisdom of Marcus Cicero and encourages politicians to listen to the works of one of Rome's greatest statesmen.

Isaac Hitz Graff '14, will host a community conversation at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, located at 119 Winnebago St., Decorah. The discussion focuses on three main areas of immigration: the economy, social justice and miscellaneous areas such as e-verify, the DREAM act, etc. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

"Saving Creativity," a film produced by Seth Duin '12 and Bailey Cahlander '12, in a class taught by Thomas C. Johnson, was the Student Submission Winner at the recent Oneota Film Festival.

A huge thank you to my LIS co-workers for the wonderful "queenly" retirement party. Such fun, even with the tears. To all who attended the reception and to all who have wished me well, thank you for your good wishes, greetings and gifts. It's been a joy to work with all of you and for the great friendships we have formed. I have enjoyed my 44+ years at Luther. It has truly been a joy to come to work each day. Thanks to all.

Congratulations to participants of WEIGHT-ING GAME

Thanks to all who participated in the WEIGHT-ING GAME this past holiday season. There were 23 participants and only five who gained more than two pounds. Several stayed the same and a couple even lost weight. Kudos to all that took care of themselves first and then others.
