Distinguised Service Awards given
President Richard L. Torgerson presented the Luther Distinguished Service Award to 10 alumni Friday, Oct. 5 at the Celebration of Distinguished Service in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
The Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the college, is given in recognition of success and achievements in professional fields, service to society, contributions to community and loyalty and service to Luther.

KATIE courses to be removed
KATIE course sites older than fall 2010 will be removed from the KATIE server on Wednesday, Oct. 10 unless they've previously been designated to be saved. In preparation for the KATIE upgrade we are looking to remove as much material as possible so we discourage requests to "save all of mine." This does not affect any KATIE sites outside of term categories, i.e., Miscellaneous, etc.
Christmas at Luther tickets on sale Oct. 10
Christmas at Luther tickets will go on sale for alumni, non-participating LC parents, and friends at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10. We expect a very high call volume. All patrons are encouraged to go online with their reservation code to www2.luther.edu/
United Way
Reminder, all employees who turn in their United Way forms to Human Resources by Friday, Oct. 12 will have their name go into a drawing. Items include Peace Brunch tickets, Center Stage Series tickets, two one-hour massages, Book Shop gift certificates and one vacation day. Donations after that date are still welcome and appreciated. Thank you for your continued support.
Grounds
The college lawns on the upper campus will be fertilized and spot treated for broadleaf weeds, especially along sidewalks and curbs beginning Friday, Oct. 12. The fertilization process will begin during the day on Friday and spraying will take place after 5 p.m. and continue throughout the weekend, weather permitting. This procedure is in keeping with Luther's turf management policy. For a copy of the policy, contact Gary Brickman, telephone 387-1668.
Fall Break
During fall break, exterior doors of the residence halls will be locked at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 and will remain locked until 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. Farwell will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during the day to allow access to campus from the lower parking lot. Students should carry their keys and identification to gain access to their halls.

Pastor Anderson installation
Interim Campus Pastor Installation will be held during Founders' Day Chapel, 10:30-10:50 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12 in the CFL Main Hall. Celebrate the college's founding and the installation of Pastor Karri Anderson as Luther's interim campus pastor. Pastor Anderson is serving as sabbatical replacement for Pastor Amy Zalk Larson during the 2012-13 academic year. Rev. Darrel Gerrietz from the Northeast Iowa Synod will preach, and a reception will follow chapel in the CFL lobby.
Staff meetings on Oct. 17-18
At the October staff meeting, Paul Mattson, Lora Steil and Corey Landstrom will share a little about their backgrounds, what brought them to Luther, and their vision for the departments they have been called to lead. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.
Flexible Benefit reminder
Current enrollees in the Flexible Benefit Plan may visit www.myflexonline.com to view current contributions and claims. This is a useful site that gives a total picture of an employee’s health care and/or dependent child care reimbursement plan. Claim forms may be printed from this site; and includes information of what are and are not allowable expenses.
Health care reminder for Luther health care participants
Luther health care plan will pay 100 percent in even numbered years for
- Routine physical exam for employee, spouse and children ages 7 and over
- Blood panel screening for employees and spouses age 21 and over
- PSA blood screening for male employees and spouses ages 40 and over.
Routine mammograms are paid at 100 percent by the plan every year for female employees and spouses ages 40 and over, and one baseline mammogram for female employees and spouses age 35-39.
Health care reminder
Winneshiek County Public Health Office only charges a $15 administrative fee for vaccination(s) of children 18 and under. The Luther Midwest Benefits health plan reimburses $10 maximum per immunization. Vaccinations at the clinics cost substantially more. All Saints Day chapel Nov. 2
All Saints Day chapel will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in the CFL Main Hall. College Ministries would like help in identifying children born or adopted in the Luther community in the last year as well as the names of those loved ones who have passed away that you would like the community to remember in prayer. Employees, their spouses and children, and students' parents and siblings will be listed in the bulletin. There will be an opportunity for participants to light candles and name other saints to be remembered. Contact College Ministries with additional names at 387-1040 or <ministry>, by Friday, Oct. 26.

'Much Ado About Nothing' continues through Oct. 11
Considered one of Shakespeare's best comedies, "Much Ado About Nothing" will be presented through Oct. 11 by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.
Final production dates are Oct. 10-11 at 6 p.m. All performances are at the Harvey Wilkins Plaza located outside in front of the main entrance to Sampson-Hoffland Laboratories on the Luther campus.
Adventurer Thorleifsson lecture Oct. 10
Thorleif Thorleifsson, Norwegian marine explorer and adventurer, will present the lecture "A Voyage Around the North Pole: Modern Exploration and Climate Change" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the CFL Recital Hall.
The lecture is open to the public with no charge of admission. A reception with Thorleifsson and Mari Sæther, environmental counselor at the Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C., will be held following the lecture in Qualley Lounge.
Dieseth open house Oct. 11
Members of the Luther community are invited to an Open House for Dieseth Hall 9-10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. Join members of the Residence Life staff for refreshments and a tour of the newly renovated Dieseth Hall. Enter through the upper doors of Dieseth Hall. Tour guides will assist attendees on a tour through the building.
Johnson show begins Oct. 12
A selection of conceptual small works of art, "a res cogitans," created by Todd Johnson '85 will be showcased beginning Friday, Oct. 12 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center For the Arts.
The art, on display through Nov. 15, is sponsored by Luther's art department.
Woman's Club hosts Jorgensen Oct. 16

FAS: Spencer Martin and Jessica Paul Oct. 19
Spencer Martin and Jessica Paul will perform a faculty viola and piano recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 in the Noble Recital Hall.
The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will feature pieces by Brenno Blauth, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Dale and Paul Hindemith.
Alpha Phi Omega adventure race Oct. 20
An adventure race, sponsored by the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity chapter, will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 starting at the Regents Center.
Race entry fee $10 for students and $20 for non-students. For a relay team, the student group fee is $15 and the non-student group fee is $30. Entries for the adventure race will be taken until Oct. 19.

Luther Fall Fling community service day Oct. 20
Student volunteers from Luther College's Student Congregation will help Decorah residents with spring chores Saturday, Oct. 20 when Luther holds its annual Fall Fling community service day. Luther students will help Decorah area residents with yard work, planting, light housework, window removal and cleaning, and other spring chores.
Decorah residents may sign up by contacting Luther College Ministries, 387-1271 or <ministry>, before Friday, Oct. 12.
CSS: 'An Evening With Abigail Washburn' Oct. 20
Abigail Washburn, touring clawhammer banjo artist and folk singer/songwriter will collaborate with indie singer/songwriter Kai Welch for "An Evening with Abigail Washburn" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in the CFL Main Hall.
Tickets for the performance go on sale Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Luther Box Office. Tickets are $20, $18 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.
Take a Kid to the Game Oct. 20
Luther Athletes Serving Others will sponsor “Take a Kid to the Game!” from 1–4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Luther Football Game. LASO invites children to sit with a Luther athlete during the games. The event is open to area children with no charge for participation; snacks are provided. FAS: Jessica Paul Oct. 21
Jessica Paul will perform a collaborative piano recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The program will feature Luther faculty and local musicians collaborating with Paul to perform a mix of instrumental and vocal music.
Interfaith celebration Oct. 23
Interfaith Holiday Celebration: Eid al Adha Reception, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in Peace Dining Room. Join the MSAA, IFSA, College Ministries and the Luther Diversity Center for light refreshments and a brief program celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid al Adha. Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the end of the Hajj—the annual pilgrimage to Mecca—and celebrates Abraham’s faithfulness and obedience to God. Jews, Christians and Muslims look to Abraham as an example of faith. Reception is open to all with no charge for admission.
100 Wells Challenge benefit Oct. 27
The 2012 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America national youth gathering artists Agape, Lost and Found and Rachel Kurtz will perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in CFL Main Hall.
General admission fee is $15, $12 per person for groups of 10 or more. All proceeds will benefit the 100 Wells Challenge and the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Luther's piano quartet performs Oct. 27
The Luther College Piano Quartet will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Noble Recital Hall. Luther faculty members of the quartet will performing in this order: Tarn Travers, violin, Spencer Martin, viola, Eric Kutz, cello and Miko Kominami, piano.

President Obama is the fourth U.S. president to have the Nobel Peace Prize awarded, the others are Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1919) and Jimmy Carter (2002).
