Honoring the Torgersons
Mark your calendars for two dates in May when the campus will pay tribute to President Rick and Mrs. Judy Torgerson. The Torgerson's will be honored Friday, May 3, as part of the annual Student Research Symposium. All are invited to "A Torgerson Tribute: 14 Years of Mojo from the Get-go!" at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 16.
March and April staff meeting notice
For the March staff meeting, Diane Tacke will provide tips and options for retirement planning and Greg Lonning will talk about creating a culture of health in the workplace. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, and 9 a.m. Thursday, March 21.
Please note that the dates of the April staff meeting have changed. Meetings will be held twice at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, and 9 a.m. Thursday, April 18.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Spring break housing
The residence halls will close for spring break at 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, and reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 31. ID cards will be deactivated for Farwell, Larsen, Olson, Brandt and Ylvisaker, so students in those halls who will be on campus during break must find their own housing in other residence buildings. Students must register in the Residence Life office by March 18 in order to stay in Dieseth, Miller, Baker Village, College Apartments, Sustainability House, Prairie Houses or Norby. All other buildings will be locked.
Farwell locked for Spring Break
Faculty and staff that use the Farwell parking lot and elevator should plan ahead as spring break approaches. Farwell Hall will be locked for break starting at 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, and will reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 31.
Applications due March 15 for Student Research Symposium
Student applications are due Friday, March 15, to present research at Luther's Student Research Symposium May 3. The Symposium is an exciting, full-day event to celebrate the vibrant intellectual life and learning at Luther. All Luther students are eligible and encouraged to apply to present research and creative work—through oral presentation, poster presentation, creative performance or exhibition. Routine well child immunization benefit amended
The routine well child immunization benefit in the Luther health plan has been amended for children through age six. It now includes 100 percent coverage for immunizations included in the recommendations and criteria established by the United States Preventive Services Task Force. Staff can view their vacation, sick and personal day balances by signing into my.luther.edu. Click on the "Employees" tab. The employee profile section has a link titled "Leave Plan Summary." Click on this link to view summary. Non-exempt staff information is shown in "Hours." Exempt staff information is shown in "Days." Supervisors may see how much leave is available for their direct reports by clicking on the "Supervisor Leave Balance Remaining" button.
TIAA-CREF consultant on campus March 13-15 to discuss new retirement investment options
A TIAA-CREF consultant will be on campus March 13–15. An additional retirement investment strategy will be available to employees as of April 1. Employees may choose to direct after-tax dollars to a Roth IRA. Educational meetings will be provided by the TIAA consultant from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, and 9:45–10:45 a.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Mott Room, Dahl Centennial Union. Lecture and Fine Arts committee introduces new application and funding schedule
The Lecture and Fine Arts committee is introducing a new application review schedule, permitting members of the Luther community to submit requests for funds more frequently throughout the academic year. The first phase for 2013-14 applications begins April 8 and closes April 15. Requests that were previously declined may be revised and resubmitted. Wrestling 'Sea of Blue' fans invited to nationals
Norse wrestling fans are invited to a Saturday afternoon social gathering from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Marriott, Atrium Waterfall Terrace, during the Saturday afternoon break of the NCAA III National Wrestling Championships. The Cedar Rapids Marriott is located at 1200 Collins Road N. E.
The National Championships are being hosted by Cornell College and will take place at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena March 15-16.
Tickets can be purchased at the door, request to be in sections T and U, the designated sections for Luther "Sea of Blue" wrestling fans.

Sports results
Clare Slagel '16 has qualified for the 2013 NCAA III National Swimming and Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas March 20-23. Slagel qualified in both the 100 and 200 backstroke and will swim the 500 freestyle for her bonus event.
Women's track and field competed in the NCAA III National Indoor Championships March 8-9 in Naperville, Ill. Tricia Serres '16, earned all-America honors with a fourth place finish in the mile. Serres posted a time of 4:50.50 that was a new school record. The distance medley relay team of Maggie Pierson '14, Kelsey Strand '15, Annie Klepper '13 and Serres placed ninth, one place out of all-American honors.
Women's tennis lost, 3-6, to UW-La Crosse and, 2-7, to Winona State University on March 9 in Winona, Minn.
Luther baseball traveled to the Minneapolis Metrodome for its season opening doubleheader against Macalester College. The Norse swept the Scots, 2-1 (8), 4-1.
POSTPONED: Faculty Artist Series: Collaborative faculty voice recital postponed until April 5
The Luther College voice faculty's collaborative recital in honor of composers Benjamin Britten, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner has been postponed until 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will include opera scenes from "Falstaff," "Rigoletto," "La Traviata," "Il Trovatore," "Die Walküre" and "The Rape of Lucretia," as well as several arias and chamber works.

Human Dissection seminars March 4-21
Have you ever wanted to see what the inside of a human body looks like? The Human Dissection and Anatomy J-term students would like to share their dissections with the campus. Collegiate Chorale to perform March 12
Luther College Collegiate Chorale will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the CFL. The performance by the 85-member Collegiate Chorale is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The 2013 Collegiate Chorale tour will include the works "Water Night" by Eric Whitacre, ''Sure on this Shining Night'' by Morten Lauridsen, and "O Nata Lux" by Guy Forbes. The Chorale will also perform "Psalm 108," which is an unpublished new work by the young composer David von Kampen.
Wii league bowl-off March 13 in Book Shop

Gabriel Weisberg to present Gerhard Marcks Art History Lecture March 13
Gabriel Weisberg, professor of art history at the University of Minnesota and the country's foremost expert on the Barbizon School, will deliver Luther's 2012-13 Gerhard Marcks Art History Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, in Olin 102. The illustrated lecture titled, "The Etching Renaissance in France: 1850-1880," discusses why etching became the most sensitive medium for progressive artists in the latter half of the 19th century.
Decorah Blue Zones project: community engagement focus group March 14
All are invited to join members of the Decorah Blue Zones committee to learn more about the Blue Zones and provide input into the overall community engagement plan. J-Term Fair March 14
The annual J-Term Fair, sponsored by the Center for Global Learning, will be held from 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, March 14, in the Union lounge. Melear '95 on campus March 14-15
Eric Melear '95, will return to campus Thursday-Friday, March 14-15, to help prepare students for possible careers in opera. The Decorah community is invited to attend a public master class at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, March 14 in the Noble Recital Hall.
Melear will talk about life after Luther for performers-specifically singers and pianists. He will discuss masters programs and young artist programs including what to look for, what to ask, what is appropriate, what is expected and when, how to build skills and make most of the talent, auditioning and aria packages.
The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther College Visual and Performing Arts to present 'On the Verge, or—the Geography of Yearning'
"On the Verge, or—the Geography of Yearning" will be presented March 14-16 by Luther's Department for Visual and Performing Arts. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 14 and 16 and 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 15. All performances will be held in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Tickets for the performance are $10 or free with Luther identification.
This will be the final production for theatre director Bob Larson, who will be retiring at the end of the semester after 48 years of service at Luther.
Jin Park to speak at Religion Forum lecture March 14
Reflecting upon the values of the modern world and its concept of justice, Jin Park, associate professor at American University, Washington D.C., will present the Luther Religion Forum Lecture, "Justice and Values in a Globalized World." Park's lecture, held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 14, in the CRH, is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty Artist Series: Murasaki Duo March 16
The Murasaki Duo, Luther College ensemble-in-residence, will perform a recital titled, "The Commissions," at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in the NRH. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Murasaki Duo consists of husband and wife team Eric Kutz, cello, and Miko Kominami, piano. The duo formed in 1996 at the Juilliard School and has been dedicated to performing cello and piano literature as chamber music ever since.
'Music in the Shape of a Pear' concert March 17
The Decorah High School Concert Choir will join seven Luther faculty and six Luther students for the semi-annual "Music in the Shape of a Pear" concert. Steve Smith will direct this spring's concert at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the NRH. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission and will feature works created by Smith as well as a collaborative piece featuring music by Smith and choreography by Amanda Hamp.
Luther Symphony Orchestra to perform March 17
The Luther College Symphony Orchestra will present an early spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the CFL. The program will begin with a performance of the first movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, Op. 47 and conclude with a performance of "Tod und Verklärung" ("Death and Transfiguration") by German composer Richard Strauss. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Just Desserts' event to celebrate the opening of the Center for Women and Gender Equality March 17
Join in celebrating the opening of the Center for Women and Gender Equality from noon-3 p.m., Sunday, March 17, at the Gjerset House. The Gjerset house is located two houses down from the CFA and is formerly known as the Upward Bound house. Free desserts will be available courtesy of area businesses and college ministries. Come to eat delicious desserts, learn about the hopes for the center and the activities of global concerns groups and other area justice organizations.
Empty Bowls project March 17
Luther College and the tri-state community will join together in March in an effort to fight hunger through the community's eighth annual Empty Bowls project. Professional potters and Luther students are making hundreds of handcrafted bowls for this year's event held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in the CFA atrium.
Art Song Jamboree-Song Jam March 18
The second Song Jam of the 2012-13 Luther College Art Song Jamboree series will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, March 18 in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Art Song Jamboree, a music series dedicated to the exploration of art song, new and old, is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty Artist Series: Karen Kanakis March 19
Karen Kanakis will perform a voice recital 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the NRH. The program will feature the works of Gluck, Cesti, Respighi, Strauss, Obradors, and a composition by Brooke Joyce. 'Renewables in Your Home' information session March 19
A presentation and discussion will take place from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Borlaug room of the Dahl Centennial Union. The presentation will include certified RESNET rater and BPI envelope specialist Joel Zook of the Winneshiek Energy District and certified local solar installer Dennis Pottratz of Go Solar! Discussion will focus on local services available to help homes achieve net zero emissions, assistance in deciding if a home is a good candidate for incorporating renewables and a briefing on available economic incentives. Spring Discovery Club begins April 2
Have your kids enjoy spring with outdoor adventures after-school. Kids, kindergarten through second grade, will visit local natural areas to learn about various ecosystems, visit area farms and meet and greet amazing critters. Women, Faith and Finance seminar April 12

Student Recitals
Ariel Gauslow '13 will perform a soprano recital at noon Sunday, March 17, in the NRH. A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Robert Christman has received a 10-month Fulbright Award to conduct research in Germany during his sabbatical next year. The award was one of approximately ten research Fulbrights given out for Germany this year to senior scholars in all disciplines.
Andi Beckendorf presented "From the Studio to the Stage: Active Learning for the Student Performer" at the Music Library Association annual meeting Feb. 27- March 2 in San Jose, Calif. The presentation featured the research instruction sessions she has done with faculty and students from music studio seminars at Luther.
Gwen Van Gerpen, Jenna Eichberger and Sally Mallam Hovden attended the 13th annual St. Olaf Round Table on academic support March 1.
Rachel Ware published an article, "The Use of Science and Imagery in the Voice Studio - A Survey of Voice Teachers in the United States and Canada," in the National Association of Teachers of Singing's "Journal of Singing," Vol. 69 No. 4, March/April 2013 issue.
Jodi Enos-Berlage gave a presentation at the 2013 Iowa Water Conference March 4-5 in Ames as part of the session titled "Joining Forces: Mutually Beneficial Collaborations between Watershed Improvement Projects and Iowa's Small Colleges." Both Enos-Berlage and Jacob Wittman '12 presented posters at the conference titled, "Involving Microbiology Students in a Watershed Project: Reconnecting Students with the Land," and "Expanding Opportunities and Responsibilities in Water Resource Education" respectively. For the second year in a row, Wittman was awarded first place in the student poster competition.
Enos-Berlage recently presented the results of faculty/student research in the Dry Run Creek Watershed to the Dry Run Creek Watershed Improvement Association and facilitated the development of a recently-awarded $100,000 grant proposal from the Iowa Watershed Improvement Review Board. These funds will provide cost-sharing dollars to watershed landowners to implement strategies for water quality improvements, as well as support continued water quality research by Luther students and faculty for the next two years.

Technical media coordinator: Three-quarter time position of technical media coordinator. Coordinator is responsible for providing the technical media support for the music department and campus programming. Coordinator will also provide technical leadership in marketing Luther College programming to a larger audience. Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, at least five years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Administrative assistant in nursing: Two or four year degree preferred along with appropriate work experience. Responsible for the ongoing support staff activities for the department of nursing Decorah office.
