Presidential search update
The presidential search committee met on Thursday, Oct. 4 to review applicant credentials.
The committee encourages faculty, staff and students to submit additional names in nomination as we enter the final month of candidate recruitment. Names may be sent to [email protected].

Fall break
During fall break, exterior doors of the residence halls will remain locked until 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. Farwell will be open Tuesday and Wednesday during the day to allow access to campus from the lower parking lot.
Flu shots/mist offered Oct. 16
Flu shots/Flu mist will be offered to staff/faculty during Fall break on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Health Service between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Price is $25.00.
Staff meetings on Oct. 17-18
At the October staff meeting, Paul Mattson, Lora Steil and Corey Landstrom will share a little about their backgrounds, what brought them to Luther, and their vision for the departments they have been called to lead. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.
Work-study supervisors
Reminder: Thursday, Oct. 25 from 9:45-10:45 a.m., all first-year students are asked to attend an advising meeting. Students have been told by their advisers about this meeting, but many feel that their first priority is their work-study obligation during these hours. If a first-year student asks you whether there is any way to adjust or accommodate their hours so that they can attend this meetings, we would appreciate your support. Flexible Benefit reminder
Current enrollees in the Flexible Benefit Plan may visit www.myflexonline.com to view current contributions and claims. This is a useful site that gives a total picture of an employee’s health care and/or dependent child care reimbursement plan. Claim forms may be printed from this site; and includes information of what are and are not allowable expenses.
Health care reminder for Luther health care participants
Luther health care plan will pay 100 percent in even numbered years for
- Routine physical exam for employee, spouse and children ages 7 and over
- Blood panel screening for employees and spouses age 21 and over
- PSA blood screening for male employees and spouses ages 40 and over.
Routine mammograms are paid at 100 percent by the plan every year for female employees and spouses ages 40 and over, and one baseline mammogram for female employees and spouses age 35-39.
Health care reminder
Winneshiek County Public Health Office only charges a $15 administrative fee for vaccination(s) of children 18 and under. The Luther Midwest Benefits health plan reimburses $10 maximum per immunization. Vaccinations at the clinics cost substantially more. All Saints Day chapel Nov. 2
All Saints Day chapel will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in the CFL Main Hall. College Ministries would like help in identifying children born or adopted in the Luther community in the last year as well as the names of those loved ones who have passed away that you would like the community to remember in prayer. Employees, their spouses and children, and students' parents and siblings will be listed in the bulletin.
There will be an opportunity for participants to light candles and name other saints to be remembered. Contact College Ministries with additional names at 387-1040 or <ministry>, by Friday, Oct. 26.
Luther's green power
As part of the ongoing commitment to using green power, Luther is now participating in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership. Luther's growing use of green power—more than four million kilowatt-hours of green power in the 2011-12 academic year—is enough to meet 28 percent of the campus' electricity use.

Shakespeare film showing Oct. 19
So if Shakespeare didn’t write Shakespeare, who did? For one answer, see the 2011 Hollywood film “Anonymous”—political intrigue cloaked in costume drama with Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Derek Jacobi and Mark Rylance. Sponsored by Mark Z. Soviet propaganda poster exhibit Oct. 19-Jan. 20
An exhibit of reprinted Soviet propaganda posters from World War II, donated by Luther Professor Emeritus Richard Cole, will be on display on the main level in Preus Library Oct. 19-Jan. 20.
Clara Bergan '13, curated the exhibition. After graduating from Decorah High School in 2010, she came to Luther to major in environmental studies.
Take a Kid to the Game Oct. 20
Luther Athletes Serving Others will sponsor “Take a Kid to the Game!” from 1–4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Luther Football Game. LASO invites children to sit with a Luther athlete during the game. The event is open to area children with no charge for participation; snacks are provided.

Travers faculty recital Oct. 20
Tarn Travers will perform a faculty violin recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in the Noble Recital Hall.
Travers will be joined by Eric Kutz, associate professor of music, cello and Miko Kominami, adjunct faculty, piano.
The program, open to the public with no charge for admission, includes Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's Passacaglia for solo violin, Beethoven's 10th sonata for violin and piano, and Dvorak's Piano Trio in F minor.
Reformation day roundtable panel Oct. 21
Join the discussion, “Tolerance then and now: the development of religious pluralism from the Reformation to modernity” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 in Olin 102. The panel includes: Professor Hans Cools of the Catholic University in Louvain, Belgium; Rev. Matthew Larson, pastor of Burr Oak-Hesper Lutheran Church and former military chaplain; and Luther professors Wanda Deifelt, Todd Green and Karla Suomala, for a lively discussion about tolerance and pluralism. Martenson lectures Oct. 21 and 23
Chris Martenson, economic trend researcher and forecaster, will present the lecture "A Crash Course: Why Your Future Is At Risk" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in Valders 206. He will also present a second lecture "Required Study: The Essential Insights For Prospering In our Increasingly Uncertain Future" at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 in Valders 206.
The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. A reception with Martenson will be held following each lecture in the Valders concourse.
Chesla exhibit on display Oct. 22-Dec. 2
An exhibit of rust and salt prints created by artist Joe Chesla will be on display Oct. 22-Dec. 2 in the CFL. Chesla creates one-of-a-kind mineral infused rust and salt prints on specially treated fibrous paper from metal plates that are exposed to the natural processes of oxidization. Chesla's work has been exhibited across the country in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Hawaii and Las Vegas.
Not-So-Silent-Movie showing Oct. 24
Luther will present "A Night at the Not-So-Silent-Movies" 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 in Peace Dining Room. The evening will feature a screening of "They Would Elope," a short silent film from 1909 starring Mary Pickford, with new music written and performed by Los Angeles composer and violinist Maria Newman. The one-hour performance and presentation will focus on music's role in film, and the challenges specific to melding music to the art of film. Dessert and coffee will be provided.
Leffler performs flute recital Oct. 25
Hannah Leffler will perform a flute recital at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 in the Noble Recital Hall.
The program includes "Sonata for flute and piano," by Erwin Schulhoff, "Duo Seraphim," by Claudio Monteverdi, "Sonata Latino," by Mike Mower, "Three Romances," by Robert Schumann, "Zoom Tube," by Ian Clarke and "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso," by Saint-Saëns, a transcription of a famous virtuosic violin work. Leffler will be joined by Du Huang, piano and Carol Hester, flute.
Center Stage Series: Sphinx Virtuosi performs Oct. 26
Sphinx Virtuosi, a conductorless ensemble of soloists, comprising top alumni of the national Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino string players, brings their classical music talent to the Luther at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.

Luther's piano quartet performs Oct. 27
The Luther College Piano Quartet will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Noble Recital Hall. Luther faculty members of the quartet perform in this order: Tarn Travers, violin, Spencer Martin, viola, Eric Kutz, cello and Miko Kominami, piano.
Fall Board of Regents meeting Oct. 26-27
The Regents will meet on campus Oct. 26-27. Their agenda includes a presentation on the role of information technology at a liberal arts college, a session on the board's role in philanthropy, an update on the presidential search, and the dedication of the solar energy project. The Regents' business meeting, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Loyalty Board Room, is open to members of the campus community.
Solar project dedication Oct. 27
Show your support for clean, renewable energy. At noon Saturday, Oct. 27, Luther will dedicate the Baker Village Solar Energy Production Facility. The brief ceremony will be held at the site on Pole Line Road (rain location: Baker Commons). This is the largest single solar project in Iowa. Once coupled with a smaller solar array that will be installed later this year near Baker Commons, both facilities will produce all of the energy consumed by Baker Village, making it the largest facility in the state powered by the sun.
Music in the Shape of a Pear Oct. 28
Luther will host its semi-annual "Music in the Shape of a Pear," directed by Brooke Joyce at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 in the Noble Recital Hall.
Featured performers include Joyce, piano and Nathan Wesselowski, tenor. They will perform "The Holy Sonnets of John Donne" by Benjamin Britten and three works by Joyce: "The Path," "Afterthoughts of Lakeside Park" and an excerpt from Joyce's opera "An Imaginary Line."
Balalaika and Ballroom Dancing Oct. 28
Luther's Balalaika will perform at a fundraiser for the Montessori school. In addition to live music, the benefit features international cuisine and ballroom dancing instruction by Luther’s Ballroom Dancing Club. The event runs from 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 at the Steyer Opera House in the Hotel Winneshiek. Tickets available until Oct. 18: $50 individual, $85 couple. Tax deductible donation. Call for NCUR abstracts due Nov. 7
Luther students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2013 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Luther will provide support for selected students to present at NCUR.
The conference is April 11-13, at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Applications for the on-campus selection process are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Borashu Project requests unused shoes
Have extra shoes? Help the Borashu Project by donating unused shoes to the Diversity Center. The Project is aimed at helping students from Swaziland who have to walk an average of four miles to and from school each day Barefoot. Shoes of any size, style and wear are equally encouraged. The Project is also accepting donations to assist in the shipping of these shoes overseas. A donation box and envelope are located in the Diversity Center.

Cindy Goede's mother, Linda Doris (Olson) Goede, 81, of La Crosse passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, surrounded by family and friends after a battle with cancer. Cindy's father, Ralph Norman Goede, 86, of La Crescent died Aug. 9.
