Staff meeting Sept. 19 and 20
Come to the September staff meeting and try to stump a panel of "experts" with your most puzzling work-related questions, such as "Who is this KATIE everyone talks about?" or "What do I do if a mouse scurries under my desk?" The meeting will also include a report on the College Resources Council and information about the United Way. Work-study supervisors
Reminder: Thursday, Sept. 13 from 9:45-10:45 a.m., all first year students are asked to attend an advising meeting. Hanging Waste Baskets available
The Hanging Waste Basket is a small waste basket that hangs on your office's blue recycling bin, assuming you have one, and is meant to replace your office's black waste basket. It is designed to encourage waste reduction and recycling.

'Be Still' prayer-centering sessions
College Ministries invites the community to "Be Still," a weekly session of centering prayer 10:30-10:45 a.m. Thursdays in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. "Be Still" is an opportunity to resist nonstop busyness and deepen capacities for reflection, silence and wonder through group contemplative prayer.

Baker Village now powered by the sun
Alliant Energy recently inspected Luther's new 280 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array and gave its final approval for interconnection with the local power grid. The system, located north of Pole Line Road, is currently the largest in Iowa and it makes Baker Village the largest net zero (greenhouse gas emissions) facility in the state. Stories about the project appeared in several media outlets this summer including Iowa Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Radio and the Des Moines Register.

Habitat for Humanity meeting and eco-house
Luther's Habitat for Humanity chapter will hold an informational meeting at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 in Valders 206. Find out about local build dates and our upcoming spring break trip.
Luther's HFH chapter will join with the Winneshiek county chapter to build a local eco-house. Help is needed every Tuesday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. until the first snowfall. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Employee blood screening available
Employee blood screening will be available at Health Service on Tuesday, Sept. 25, Thursday, Oct. 11, Tuesday, Oct. 16 and Thursday, Oct. 25.
To register go to health.luther.edu, click on "Employee Blood Screening" on the left side of page and fill out the online form. Be sure to hit "submit."

This site shows a total picture of an employee’s health care reimbursement plan and/or dependent/child care reimbursement plan. Claim forms may be printed from this site. It also includes information on what are and are not allowable expenses.
Health care plan reminders
Health care reminder for Luther health care participants: Luther health care plan will pay 100 percent for a routine physical exam for employee, spouse and children ages seven and over; blood panel screening for employees and spouses age 21 and over; PSA blood screening for male employees and spouses ages 40 and over.
Routine mammograms are paid at 100 percent by plan every year for female employees and spouses ages 40 and over, and one baseline mammogram for female employees and spouses age 35-39.

'Picturing the Parables' exhibit on display
An art exhibit titled "Picturing the Parables" is on display through Oct. 7 on the upper level of CFL. This art display will include numerous works completed by 20 different artists who have visually interpreted Christ's parables.
The 29 pieces of artwork on display will vary from time-honored and non-traditional media to abstract pieces that display how God resolved to use the incarnation of his son to spread the word of his own existence.
Ashizawa performance Sept. 11
Izumi Ashizawa, assistant professor of acting/movement at the University of Maryland, will give the performance, "Dreams in the Arms of the Binding Lady," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the Jewel Theatre in the CFA. Combining elements of Japanese Noh, Kabuki and Suzuki styles, "Dreams in the Arms of the Binding Lady" puts both puppets and live actors to use in creating a Japanese ghost story and ritualistic ceremony.
Guest recital: Kate Hamilton Sept. 11
Kate Hamilton, associate professor of viola at Concordia College, will present a guest recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the Noble Recital Hall with Jay Hershberger, associate professor of piano at Concordia College, on piano.
The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program includes pieces Ralph Vaughn Williams, Max Bruch, Fritz Kreisler, Frank Bridge and Johannes Brahms.
'Speaking Shakespeare' Sept. 13
"Speaking Shakespeare," a workshop led by two members of the Great River Shakespeare Festival will be held 9:40-11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in CFA Studio I as an introductory workshop intended for all campus community members. The presenters will also meet with classes and with the casts of the three fall Shakespeare productions. They will be available in the Cafeteria from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, to discuss careers in the performing arts. Sponsored by the Mark Z. Muggli "Our Shakespeare" Jones project.
NAA Fall Sports Luncheon Sept. 13
The Norse Athletic Association will hold a Fall Sports Luncheon at noon Thursday, Sept. 13 in Peace Dining Room. Cost for lunch is $5. Fall sport coaches will speak on their respective seasons. Valdivieso to lecture on 'New Photography'
Odalis Valdivieso, author and journalist, will present "New Photography" 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in Room 203 of the CFA. The lecture is open to the public with no charge of admission.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Valdivieso is an artist who questions conventional assumptions of the limitations of photography. Her recent works focus on the intersection of urban landscapes and abstract spatial relationships. Her current system isolates the photographic moment and the physical materiality of a photograph.
'Can the Past Predict the Future (And Why it Matters)'
Sean Costigan, Helen Lavoix and Chris Pallaris, three international experts in technology, political science and commercial intelligence, will lead a panel discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 in the CRH. The panel, titled "Can the Past Predict the Future? (And Why it Matters.)" is open to the public with no charge for admission. The panel will discuss methods and tools of prediction as a way to estimate outcomes for businesses, organizations and nations.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Economics and Business and funded by the Malcolm and Maybelle Estrem Endowed Program for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Bert M. and Mildred O. Dahl Chair in Economics and Business.
Shakespeare on Film Sept. 14
“Our Shakespeare on Film: Coriolanus” will be shown 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 in Valders 262. Full-throated, full-throttled Shakespeare, with Ralph Fiennes, Gerard Butler and Vanessa Redgrave playing in a contemporary, war-torn, Balkan setting that represents the traumas of fifth-century B.C. Rome. Free pizza provided.
Faculty Artist Series: Andrew Whitfield Sept. 14
Andrew Whitfield will perform a baritone voice recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 in the Noble Recital Hall. The program, "From Bach's Hand: In Search of Works for Younger Singers," is a lecture recital.
Whitfield will be assisted by Luther's Kathryn Reed, harpsichord, and Kathryn Seidel, bassoon. Luther students that are in Whitfield's voice studio will assist him on the concert.
This performance is an outgrowth of research conducted by Whitfield in Germany in summer 2012, made possible by grants that Whitfield received from the German Lutheran Church and from the Luther College Doris and Ragnvald Ylvisaker Endowment for Faculty Growth.
SAC Spotlight features Green Tea Sept. 14
Luther College SAC Spotlight presents Green Tea, an indie roots rock band, performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 in Marty's CyberCafé. By mixing Celtic roots with jazz, rock, classical and indie, Green Tea has built a new generation of music, often described as sounding like John Butler Trio for Chili Pepper fans. Decorah Area Community Day Sept. 15
The Decorah and Luther communities are invited to Decorah Area Community Day Saturday, Sept. 15. Come for a picnic lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Regents Center circle drive and stay for the football game at 1 p.m. in Carlson Stadium.
Cost for the picnic and admission to the football game is $2 for adults, children can eat and attend the game free. RSVP is required. Children may order a free "True. Blue. Norse." t-shirt at time of registration.

Faculty artist series: Jacob Lassetter Sept. 15
Jacob Lassetter will perform a voice recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 in the Noble Recital Hall. The program will feature the works of Dominick Argento, Handel, Jacques Ibert, Modest Mussorgsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Franz Schubert and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Internationally renowned organist Diane Meredith Belcher will perform the annual benefactor organ recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, CFL.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program includes pieces by Bach, Johann Gottfried Walther, Lee Hoiby and Charles Marie Widor.
Faculty Artist Series: Rebecca Boehm Shaffer Sept. 16
Rebecca Boehm Shaffer will perform a horn recital at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 in the Noble Recital.
Boehm Shaffer's program includes Georg Philipp Telemann's Concerto in D Major, Johannes Brahms' Horn Songs for horn, bassoon and piano, and David Amram's "Blues and Variations for Monk" and Franz Schubert's "Auf dem Strom."
Collaborating artists are Kathryn Seidel, bassoon, Jessica Paul, piano, and Karen Kanakis, soprano.
'Religion and Lobbying: a Quaker Perspective'
Diane Randall, Executive Secretary of the Friends Committee on National Legislation, will speak on "Religion and Lobbying: a Quaker Perspective" 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 in Olin 102. The event is sponsored by the Religion Department Forum. She will also speak at the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center at 119 Winnebago 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17 on "The World We Seek: Lobbying for Peace and Justice." Both events are open to the public with no charge for admission.
College Night Sept. 17
College Night will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17 in the Sports and Recreation Center in the Regents Center. The college invites all students and families interested in information about post-high school education options to attend.
Students are encouraged to preregister for the fair to take advantage of a new scanning system. By registering online prior to the event, students will avoid filling out countless information cards.
Faculty Artist Series: Michael Chesher Sept. 18
Michael Chesher will perform a faculty artist series clarinet recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18 in the Recital Hall.
The program will include Mauricio Murcia Bedoya's "Columbian Dances" for clarinet duo, Yvonne Desportes' French Suite for clarinet quartet, Timothy Kramer's "Key Fragments" for solo clarinet, Beatriz Lockheart's "Estampas Criollas," arranged by Jorge Montilla Francis and Poulenc's Sonata for two clarinets.

In June 2012, David Thompson and Allison Wright '14, supported by a student-faculty research grant from the Dean’s Office, constructed a series of tutorials for intermediate-level students of Spanish using VoiceThread (VoiceThread Tutorials for Spanish Language Learners). Thompson was a featured presenter in the webinar Reinventing Language Learning with VoiceThread in April, and his work with VoiceThread in language courses is covered in the Sept. 3 issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education.
Kate Narveson served as respondent for a session on Donne and reading at the 27th International John Donne Society Conference, held in Leiden, the Netherlands, in June. Also, her article, "'Their practice bringeth little profit': Clerical Anxieties about Lay Scripture Reading in Early Modern England," has just appeared in Private and Domestic Devotion in Early Modern Britain, ed. Jessica Martin and Alec Ryrie (Ashgate Publishing, 2012).
Andy Hageman's chapter "Ecocinema and Ideology: Do Ecocritics Dream of a Clockwork Green" in Ecocinema Theory and Practice was published by Routledge/AFI at the end of August.
Alfredo Alonso Estenoz presented the paper "Piñera y Borges: debate y representaciones ficticias" at the International Colloquium Virgilio Piñera Tal Cual that took place in Havana, Cuba June 16-19.
