COLLEGE OPERATIONS

September staff meeting

Meet new staff, hear a budget update from Eric Runestad, and learn about strategic initiatives from President Carlson at this month's staff meeting. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.

Electric vehicle survey

Luther is investigating the installation of a few electric vehicle charging stations on campus. The Center for Sustainable Communities would like to gain a better understanding of interest in and ownership of plug-in Electric Vehicles and Plug-In Electric Hybrid Vehicles. Those who own one of these cars or have plans to purchase one, please take the time to fill out this short survey.

Student H Drives

H Drive storage space is provided to students enrolled in a computer science course and continuing students who already have an H Drive. Starting fall semester 2015, incoming students are to use Google Drive for file storage. For details, see Student H Drives.

Register for Women's Basketball Junior Norse clinic

There's still time to register for the Luther Women's Basketball Junior Norse clinic. Walk-ins are welcome. Each week, Junior Norse will have the opportunity to interact with the 2015-16 Luther women’s basketball team while participating in fundamental drills, team play, shooting competitions and more. Sessions are every Thursday, 6:15-7:30 p.m., Sept. 17-Oct. 8. Registration is $40 and covers instruction and a t-shirt. For more information, contact Amanda, <necham01> or 387-1584.

Tennis lessons for all ages

Luther alumna and assistant coach Miriam Skrade is teaming up with Luther tennis players to offer tennis lessons for all ages and abilities. Clinics run for five Sundays starting Sept 27. Beginner class ($30) is 12-12:45 p.m., advanced beginners class ($40) is 12:15-1:15 p.m., junior varsity and varsity class ($50) is 12:45-2:30 p.m., adult class ($50) is 2:30-3:30 p.m. To register, email Miriam <mbskrade> before Sept. 20.

'Soup's On!' cooks needed

The Diversity Center is looking for volunteers to prepare a delicious soup for upcoming "Soup's On!" events, informal gatherings of students, faculty, staff and Decorah community members, Oct. 1 and Jan. 14. Cooks are encouraged stay and enjoy the soup. These events are a lot of fun and a great chance to meet new, interesting individuals. If interested, contact Jake, <dyerja01>.

Final MPR spotlight of Luther student composers Sept. 17

World-renowned string quintet Sybarite5 worked with student composers at Luther during fall semester 2014. The ensemble was so impressed with the talent and expressiveness of the six students that Sybarite5 performed the student works in concert. Classical MPR has broadcast interview highlights and the student-composed pieces over the last two weeks, and the final installment will air at approximately 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Listen online or tune in locally to FM 89.5.

Merritt's works on display at Luther through Oct. 18

Data is ubiquitous in the modern world. Facts and figures fly from immediate sources and countless numbers clutter people's lives, losing meaning to abstract ideas. Richard Merritt investigates the visual principles of big data through a series of paintings and drawings in his art exhibit "Schemata," on display through Oct. 18 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Both the exhibit and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther Woman's Club meeting Sept. 15

President Carlson is the special guest and speaker at the Luther Woman's Club meeting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Peace Dining Room. The event includes music, a brief business meeting, refreshments and social time. All women are invited. A shuttle will depart from the pool parking lot at 1:10 p.m.

Paideia Texts and Issues lecture: Anna Peterson

In the opening lecture of the 2015-16 Paideia Texts and Issues series, Anna Peterson, Luther College assistant professor of history, will present the lecture, "Narrating change: Norwegian women's abortion letters," held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the CFL Recital Hall. The lecture will be followed by a reception in Qualley Lounge. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Svend Rønning violin recital and public lecture

Luther's music department is pleased to host Svend Rønning in a guest violin recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Noble Recital Hall. Rønning will also give a public lecture on Scandinavian music at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. Both the recital and the lecture are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Neil Berg's "100 Years of Broadway"' Sept. 18

Singing with five Broadway stars can become one singer's reality at "Neil Berg's '100 Years of Broadway.'" As part of Luther's Center Stage Series, the show celebrates Broadway with a live music production of great moments from the finest Broadway shows of the century at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the CFL Main Hall.

Chance to sing at Center Stage Series program '100 Years of Broadway'

Vocalists 13 years and older are invited to audition to sing on stage with the stars of "100 Years of Broadway." Two winners and up to 10 runners-up will be selected by a panel, comprised of the producers and singers of the show, and Neil Berg himself, for a chance to sing on stage with the Broadway and receive complimentary tickets to a performance in the 2015-16 Center Stage season.

Anyone who submits a video to sing with the Broadway stars by Sept. 14 will receive discounted tickets to the performance; age 19 and older can purchase a ticket at the discounted rate of $15 and those age 18 and younger can order a complimentary ticket. Ride with SPOKES Sept. 19

SPOKES, Luther's student-led bike club, invites all Luther students, faculty, and staff for a ride on the Trout Run Trail at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Meet at the Luther Bell; all levels of biking experience are welcome. Get to know the people you see around campus and engage in a healthy and sustainable activity.

Faculty Research Symposium Sept. 19

The third annual Faculty Research Symposium will begin at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, in Valders 206. The symposium is designed to showcase the interdisciplinary conversation that is at the heart of Luther's liberal arts tradition. Following a brief welcome session, concurrent panels will take place at 10 a.m., 12:30 and 2 p.m. A complete program and schedule of speakers is available online; the event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Faculty Artist Series: Kathryn Reed, harpsichord

Performing a mix of solo harpsichord and chamber works, Kathryn Reed will perform a recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, in Noble Recital Hall. The recital, which is part of the Faculty Research Symposium, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther College to host soprano Valeria Kishkunas

Hailed by the Des Moines Register as "clear and ferociously expressive," the music department is pleased to host Valeria Kishkunas in a guest voice recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, in Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther presents Religion Forum lecture with Robert Shedinger Sept. 24

Robert Shedinger will discuss the reluctance of evolutionary scientists to re-evaluate the theory of evolution at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the CFL Recital Hall. Shedinger's lecture, "Resistance to Change in a Theory of Change: Religion, Science and Evolutionary Theory's Failure to Evolve," is the opening lecture of Luther's 2015-16 Religion Forum Series and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Administrative assistant, Economics and Business, Math and Computer Science departments: The Economics and Business, Math and Computer Science academic departments are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills for a part-time position (approximately 28 to 32-hours per week during the academic year.) Primary responsibility for assisting the three academic departments with duties including interacting with faculty, students and visitors to the Olin building, managing the office, coordinating faculty and department events, and other administrative duties. A.A. or equivalent experience preferred, with courses in business helpful and technology skills required. Aptitude for learning and using new technology required, and knowledge of current Microsoft Office Suite and Google software tools, scheduling and website software is desirable.

Development office administrative assistant: The Development office seeks a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills for a full-time position providing administrative assistance to the vice president, directors, gift planners and programs in Development. Duties span wide range of administrative tasks, including comprehensive campaign support, scheduling events and travel, routine correspondence and route inquiries. High school diploma required, 1-2 years experience in comparable position preferred.

Instructional technology librarian: Full-time instructional technology librarian to join Luther's Library and Information Services team and provide leadership for planning, implementation, management, evaluations and support of technology in the Luther College curriculum. A master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program as well as demonstrated skill in current and emerging technologies is required. Preference given to those with an interest or expertise in one or more of the following: user experience, usability testing, media copyright, software licensing, Moodle learning management system, project leadership or other relevant area of specialization, and experience working with library materials for instruction and outreach.

Keith Lesmeister's short story, "We Could've Been Happy Here," was just published in the Fall issue of Slice Magazine, a Brooklyn-based literary journal.

Harley Refsal will present a gallery talk at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Vesterheim Museum in Decorah. The talk is part of the opening reception, 5-7 p.m., for the exhibition "Woodcarved Figures, Nordic Roots," for which Refsal served as guest curator. The exhibition, sponsored by Owen and Naomi Bekkum, runs until April 17.

The Pump House Regional Art Center in La Crosse is featuring an exhibition of new works by Sarah Frydenlund in its Kader Gallery through Sept. 26. Through drawing, writing, and a collected archive of digital images and objects, these two and three-dimensional works explore the balance of relationships of personal and cultural perceptions through both scientific and lyrical language.
