Luther College 2016-18 Priorities

President Carlson is pleased to share the next iteration of the "Strategic Initiatives 2018" document discussed earlier this fall. The revised document, which is being shared with the Board of Regents, reflects the helpful feedback provided by faculty and staff. The document is available online.

October staff meetings

This month's staff meeting will include an HR/OFS presentation on how to make payments to individuals, and we will hear from Chandra Jennings, Luther's new Wellness Program director. The meeting will be held in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, and at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.

Planning for the next cottonwood tree

Do you love the cottonwood in front of Main? Do you want to help figure out where to plant the next generation? The Land Use Committee is seeking feedback regarding a potential site for Luther's next cottonwood tree. A clone of the cottonwood has been made and is ready to be planted, but we want you to help us decide on a location. Lend your voice to the conversation at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in Valders 362.

United Way campaign underway

This year's United Way campaign is off and running, raising money to assist residents of Winneshiek County. Please fill out the bright yellow donation flier you received and return it to Human Resources. United Way of Winneshiek County is assisting two more agencies this year, for a total of 20, and is trying to raise $160,000, all of which goes to the agencies. Questions? New on the website are profiles of non-profit founder Eli Williamson '02, and Megan Clark '05, who talks about her career at the Chicago History Museum. Research team members Erin Ellefsen '17, John Doorenbos '16, and Kyle Fey, assistant professor of mathematics, talk about their work on a mathematical model of vaccinations.

Also, the Residence Life website is new and improved, redesigned to be more inviting with lots of pictures and comparison charts on the first-year hall pages.

Yoga classes begin Oct. 21

Join Molly Lesmeister for an eight-week yoga session Oct. 21-Dec. 9. Class is offered Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. in Studio II in the CFA. Classes are 50 minutes in length. Luther alumna Emily Fons '06 will present a career talk at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

VPA presents 'Love and Information' 

The Visual and Performing Arts department presents the play "Love and Information" written by Caryl Churchill and directed by Bob Larson. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre, are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.  

Center for Sustainable Communities cooking class Oct. 16

Fall is here, which means soup season has officially begun! Come learn how to make borscht, a Ukrainian soup made from beets, from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in Valders 379. The instructor for this class is Maryna Bazylevych. Register for the class online.

Homecoming 2015 Oct. 16-18

Luther will celebrate Homecoming 2015 Friday through Sunday, Oct. 16-18, bringing more than 5,000 students, alumni and friends of the college to the Luther campus for class reunions, sporting events, music, dance, theater and other events. A complete schedule is available online.

Jazz ensembles perform in Marty's Oct. 16

Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in Marty's. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. Swinging arrangements from the 1940s, '50s, '60s and '70s will have audiences heading for the dance floor.

Luther alumni siblings' mixed-media works on display Oct. 16-Dec. 6

Inspired in part by the history, culture and geography of South Africa, siblings Elsa (Otte) Hammond '62, Paul Otte '63 and Daniel Otte '63 will present a mixed-media exhibit Oct. 16-Dec. 6 in the upper-level foyer of the CFL. A reception for the artists will be held 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 17. Both the exhibit and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Book Shop to host Homecoming book-signings

The Book Shop will host book-signing sessions Saturday, Oct. 17, as part of Luther's Homecoming weekend. Six members of the Luther community including Doug Eckheart, Luther professor emeritus of art; Allisa (Vanderpool) Vermillion '90; Chris Norton '14; Robert Shedinger, Luther professor of religion; Todd Green, Luther associate professor of religion; and Tabita Green, Luther director of web content; will sign copies of their books at the Book Shop. SAC Flamingo Ball tickets on sale

Student Activities Council invites the public to this year's SAC Flamingo Ball. Come celebrate and dance to the sounds of variety band The Sevilles at 9 p.m. homecoming Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Regents Center Main Gym. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at tickets.luther.edu.

Homecoming Concert Oct. 18

Featuring Luther's premiere touring ensembles, the Homecoming Concert is 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert includes performances by the Luther Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and Nordic Choir. The concert, open to the public with no charge for admission, will be streamed live at: stream.luther.edu.

Luther Woman's Club meeting Oct. 20

Facts on the proposed fiber utility for Decorah will be presented at the Luther College Woman's Club meeting at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Peace Dining Room. Presenters are Jim Fritz of the Decorah Fast Fiber committee and Jon Lubke, Winnshiek County information technology director. All women are invited. The afternoon includes a music presentation, brief business meeting and social time. A shuttle to the Union will leave from the swimming pool parking lot at 1:10 p.m.

Oen Fellows lecture Oct. 20

Filmmakers and visual artists David and Hi-Jin Kang Hodge will give the 2015 Oen Fellows lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the CFL Recital Hall. The lecture, titled "Impermanence: The Time of Man," is also part of the 2015-16 Religion Forum series and the Paideia Text and Issues Lecture series. A reception will follow in Qualley Lounge. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Dorian Community College Choral Invitational Oct. 21

Luther will host the second annual Dorian Community College Choral Invitational on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Jenson-Noble. Choirs and individual students from area community colleges will participate in a full day of activities to experience music at Luther. The public is invited to attend the 1-2 p.m. rehearsal in the Noble Recital Hall.

Center Stage Series: Lucky Plush Productions presents 'The Queue' Oct. 24

Lucky Plush Productions will perform "The Queue" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Featuring live music by The Claudettes, "The Queue" unfolds in a fictional airport, where travelers stumble humorously and awkwardly into each other's private lives. Equal parts dance and theater, Lucky Plush takes the experience of waiting in an airport and makes it come alive in surprising and relatable ways.

MKTO tickets on sale now

American musical duo MKTO will perform at Luther at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the Regents Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $30 and may be purchased online at tickets.luther.edu.

Residence hall trick-or-treating

Luther community members and their families are invited to trick-or-treat in first-year residence halls Brandt, Olson and Ylvisaker. Trick-or-treating will take place in the halls from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Participating rooms will be identified by a pumpkin on the door. There will also be games, crafts and cookie decorating.

Public Services Specialist: LIS seeks a part-time (.37 FTE) public services specialist to join our User Services and Circulation teams to provide circulation and research help services and to manage the public services equipment. The public services specialist will provide circulation services on Saturdays and some weekday hours, will participate as a member of the Circulation and User Services teams, and supervise daily production of LIS student employees working at the Circulation and Technology Help desks. Using the Reason CMS software project as a case study, Tabita Green, along with representatives from Beloit College, Carleton College and Kalamazoo College, presented on the topic of inter-institutional collaboration at the 2015 HighEdWeb conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Kristy Gould was the invited speaker for the Drake University Science Colloquium Series on Sept. 25 in Des Moines. Her talk was titled "Bird Brains: Corvid Cognition and the Blue Jay" which included research that she and Luther College students have done investigating blue jay
cognition over the past five years.

Found: Jeep key, attached to the fob that opens the door, found on the dike walking/running path, just a bit north of the Luther tennis courts. I brought it to the Information Desk in the Union, go there to claim it.

Free gas stove: Magic Chef, 1980s model. Works okay, but is finicky. Oven temp must be set 15 degrees higher than called for to get near the right temperature. Someone handy with appliances might be able to get it in better working condition. Stove is in front yard of 203 Hollihan St., Decorah. You can back up into the driveway to load.
