ANNOUNCEMENTS

2015 fall semester enrollment data

  • Luther's 2015 fall semester student enrollment is 2,337.
  • Our new registered student total is 653 (624 first-year students, 27 transfer students, two non-degree students).
  • U.S. students of color total 242 (10.4 percent of total enrollment), and international students total 147 (6.3 percent of total enrollment).
  • Thirty-nine states (including Iowa) and 65 countries (including U.S.) are represented in our total enrollment.
  • Student enrollment full-time equivalent (FTE) is 2,319.
  • Forty-one percent of our total enrollment reports Lutheran as their religious affiliation.
  • First-year to second-year persistence for the 2014 first-year student cohort is 84.8 percent, first-year to third-year persistence for the 2013 first-year student cohort is 79.9 percent, and first-year to fourth-year persistence for the 2012 first-year cohort is 81.5 percent.
  • Our most recent four-year graduation rate (2011 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2015) is 70.8 percent.
  • Our most recent five-year graduation rate (2010 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2015) is 78.2 percent.
  • Our most recent six-year graduation rate (2009 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2015) is 77.5 percent.

'Christmas at Luther' tickets for faculty/staff available Oct. 1

Faculty and staff can secure their tickets for "Christmas at Luther 2015: Savior of the Nation, Come" beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. Norse Mail problem and workaround

Norse Mail currently has a bug that prevents it from consistently adding all members of a contact group to an email (i.e., there are 10 people in the group and only nine are attached as recipients). Google is aware of the defect and working on a fix. Fortunately, there are workarounds. For details, see Norse Mail Workaround for Emailing Contact Groups.

Traffic Hearing Board seeks new member

Looking for a staff person with a sense of humor who likes a good time and will commit to being on the Traffic Hearing Board. The board meets for an hour each month to review parking citation appeals submitted by students, faculty and staff. If interested, contact Judy, <schnitju>. Dining Services coupons available

Did you know you can order coupons for Nordic Brew shakes, Marty's cookies, Peace Brunch and more? All Dining Service location coupons must be administered through the Dining Services Office and can be ordered online. Orders will be processed within 48 business hours and the purchaser will be notified when they are mailed through the SPO. Coupons can be purchased with a CBORD number, cash, check or dining dollars. Register for Women's Basketball Junior Norse clinic

There's still time to register for the Luther Women's Basketball Junior Norse clinic. Walk-ins are welcome. Each week, Junior Norse will have the opportunity to interact with the 2015-16 Luther women’s basketball team while participating in fundamental drills, team play, shooting competitions and more. Sessions are every Thursday, 6:15-7:30 p.m., through Oct. 8. Registration is $40 and covers instruction and a t-shirt. For more information, contact Amanda, <necham01> or 387-1584.

Tennis lessons for all ages

Luther alumna and assistant coach Miriam Skrade is teaming up with Luther tennis players to offer tennis lessons for all ages and abilities. Clinics run for five Sundays starting Sept 27. Beginner class ($30) is 12-12:45 p.m., advanced beginners class ($40) is 12:15-1:15 p.m., junior varsity and varsity class ($50) is 12:45-2:30 p.m., adult class ($50) is 2:30-3:30 p.m. To register, email Miriam <mbskrade>.

'Soup's On!' cooks needed

The Diversity Center is looking for volunteers to prepare a delicious soup for upcoming "Soup's On!" events, informal gatherings of students, faculty, staff and Decorah community members, Oct. 1 and Jan. 14. SAC Leadership presents financial wellness speaker

Adam Carroll will present the lecture "Financial Wellness" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Valders 206. Carroll, author of "Winning the Money Game," and founder of National Financial Educators, has presented at more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide. His message of "Building a Bigger Life, Not a Bigger Lifestyle" has been heard by more than 200,000 people. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. 

Faculty Artist Series: Gregory Peterson, organ

Featuring music as prayer and proclamation, Gregory Peterson will perform an organ recital titled "Songs of Petition, Peace and Proclamation" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the CFL Main Hall. Jim

Guest recital: Carol Chapman, soprano

As part of her current U.S. tour, soprano Carol Chapman will perform a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. 

Religion Forum opening lecture Sept. 24

Robert Shedinger will give the opening lecture for Luther's 2015-16 Religion Forum Series at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the CFL Recital Hall. This year's theme is "Impermanence – Religion and Notions of Change." In his lecture, "Resistance to Change in a Theory of Change: Religion, Science and Evolutionary Theory's Failure to Evolve," Shedinger will discuss the reluctance of evolutionary scientists to re-evaluate the theory of evolution. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Moon Festival party Sept. 24

The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is a popular harvest festival celebrated in China, Vietnam and other Asian countries. This year, the festival falls on Sept. 24. A Moon Festival celebration will take place from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Farwell Hall eighth floor lounge. There will be a variety of cultural activities and a gift raffle; delicious moon cakes and fragrant tea will be served. Johnson gives Navassa Island presentation Sept. 24

Glenn Johnson, M.D., of Decorah will give a presentation on an amateur radio expedition to Navassa Island at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in Valders 262. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Johnson will explain amateur radio, the expedition and the environmental challenges of the team's weeks on Navassa, a U.S.-controlled primitive wildlife refuge in the Caribbean, near Haiti, that is closed to most human activity.

Family Weekend Sept. 25-27

Family Weekend 2015 is scheduled for Sept. 25-27. The schedule for the weekend is online. In the interest of conserving resources, a small supply of hard-copy Family Weekend brochures will be printed for distribution to families; they will be available on the Saturday morning of Family Weekend, in the Union lobby. Wellness and APO host Adventure Race Sept. 26

An adventure race, sponsored by Luther's Mu Theta chapter of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and the Nena Amundson Lifetime Wellness Program, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. The race begins at the Regents Center Circle Drive and consists of a three-mile canoe/kayak leg, a nine-mile bike ride and a three-mile run through Decorah. Register on the Wellness website. Storybook reading and author signing Sept. 26

The Book Shop will host the sixth annual storybook reading session from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 26, in the lobby of the Union. Part of Family Weekend, the event will feature Luther education department students dressed as their favorite storybook characters as they read selections from various children's books. Author Andy Allen will sign copies of his "Stormin' Norman" children's book series from 1-3 p.m. in the Book Shop.

Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra concert Sept. 26

The Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform in concert at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert, part of Luther's Family Weekend, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Family Weekend concert Sept. 26

The music department presents an evening of choral and instrumental music at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Seven ensembles will perform, including Aurora, Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Norsemen, Wind and Percussion Ensemble and Varsity Band. 

Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra perform Sept. 26

The Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Band will perform as part of Luther's 2015 Family Weekend festivities at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in Marty's. The program will explore swing music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s and will feature compositions by Jerome Kern, Mercer Ellington, Sammy Nestico, Lee Morgan, and Benny Golson.

Chad Sonka baritone recital Sept. 29

Chad Sonka, Luther College alumni guest lecturer in music, will perform a baritone recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital, open to the public with no charge for admission, features works of composers such as Vincenzo Bellini, Gustav Holst, Walter Damrosch, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. 

Connie Bergstrom retirement party Sept. 30

Administrative assistant, Economics and Business, Math and Computer Science departments: The Economics and Business, Math and Computer Science academic departments are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills for a part-time position; approximately 28 to 32-hours per week during the academic year. Andy Hageman's book review of Tom McCarthy's novel "Satin Island" was published in the summer 2015 issue of the Science Fiction Research Association Review. The novel has been shortlisted for the 2015 Man Booker Prize.

Craig Mosher presented "The Ethics of Energy Policy Choices" at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Symposium on Field Study at Colorado College on July 10 and "Doing Death Differently: Providing Options in Rural Areas" at the National Conference on Social Work and Human Services in Rural Areas at the University of South Dakota on July 16.

Todd Green delivered a lecture at the Tripoli Shrine Center in Milwaukee on Sept. 17 titled "Exploring the Causes and Consequences of Islamophobia." A panel with representatives from the African American, Japanese American, Native American, and Sikh American communities responded to the lecture. On Sept. 18, Green offered a workshop titled "Challenging Islamophobia: Some Practical and Impractical Suggestions for Overcoming Anti-Muslim Bigotry." Participants included educators, religious leaders, and elected officials. The lecture and workshop were sponsored by a coalition of organizations, including the Milwaukee Muslim Women's Coalition, the ELCA and the Institute of World Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
