To Wade Shilts on the death of his mother, Amy Shilts of Calmar, Iowa, on March 15.

To Joe Thompson and his family on the death of his mother, Hazel Thompson, who died Tuesday, March 17 at the Eastern Star Nursing Home, Decorah. She recently celebrated her 101st birthday. She resided with her husband, Harold, at their home in Moline, Illinois, for 73 years until the past few months when they came to live first with Joe and his wife, Rhonda, in their home and then for the last few weeks at the Eastern Star Nursing Home. The family is holding a private family service at Fjelstul Funeral Home with interment to take place in Lyons, Nebraska.

Retirement

Marty Steele has announced that she will retire on May 25 with more than 26 years of service at Luther.

Marty Berg has announced that she will retire on May 30 with more than 30 years of service at Luther.

Custodial

Full-time (1.0 FTE) 12-month position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s). Hours will generally be Monday through Friday with some weekend work required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. Ability to perform maintenance and repair work of custodial equipment required. High school diploma or equivalent and valid driver license required.

Registrar

Full-time registrar responsible for leadership of the Registrar's Office, including maintaining student academic records and upholding the academic regulations of the college.

Requirements include: minimum of three years in a higher education setting; previous administrative experience as a registrar or associate or assistant registrar or as college faculty; knowledge of FERPA and other policies pertaining to compliance of federal rules and regulations; at least three years of experience with Colleague or a similar database and degree audit; and familiarity with trends in American higher education. A master's degree is preferred.

Outdoor/environmental education fellow

This is a six-month, full-time, 40 hour per week, position starting April or May 2015 and ending November or December 2015. Responsibilities include teaching, planning and implementing environmental programming throughout the summer and fall for students pre-K–12th grade, including six weeks of summer camp and a high school pre-college course in environmental studies.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Bethany (Bierman) Krepela '95, was awarded the prestigious Jay Bleeke Award at the Association of Lutheran Development Executives International Education Conference in Reno, Nevada, on Feb. 26.  The Jay Bleeke Award honors the memory of Jay Bleeke and is given annually to an ALDE young professional who shows remarkable promise in the development industry and who has served the association with distinction. At this year's conference Bethany was also elected unanimously to the ALDE Board of Directors. 

IRONHEAD (2015), a nine-minute documentary film on Decorah resident, Kelly Ludeking, recently earned Honorable Mention at the Oneota Film Festival. IRONHEAD was produced by Thomas C. Johnson, assistant professor of Communication Studies, and Neal Abbott ('15), Communication Studies student, with color by Aaron Lurth ('08), coordinator of visual media, and music by Brooke Joyce, associate professor of music and Composer-In-Residence. There will be a screening of IRONHEAD at the Hotel Winneshiek at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.  Johnson and Ludeking are participating in a short Q+A after.

In June of 2014, Bob Puffer and University of Minnesota's Mark McKay co-led an internationally attended Moodle gradebook working group in Long Beach, California. Over 1,000 users worldwide contributed ideas with a focus on accuracy, simplicity, ease-of-use, and performance (in that order). Nancy Gates-Madsen's article "Seeing is (Not) Believing: Eliseo Subiela's Dark Side of the Heart" was published in Eliseo Subiela, The Poet of Latin American Cinema, Ed. Nancy J. Membrez. (Edwin Mellen Press, 2015).

"The Islands," a poem by Reina María Rodríguez co-translated by Nancy Gates-Madsen and Kristin Dykstra, was included in the latest issue of Orion Magazine (March/April 2015), in a special section titled "Passport to Cuba."
