COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Messiah concert

Free tickets are still available for faculty, staff and students for the Messiah concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, in the CFL. Hear the story of Jesus as told by the music of G.F. Handel. Directed by Allen Hightower, participants include student soloists, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra. Tickets available to the public as well; $20 for adults and $10 for students. All tickets are available at the ticket office in the CFL.

March staff meetings

Vice presidents Keith Christensen, Kevin Kraus, Rob Larson and Scot Schaeffer will share updates from their areas at the March staff meeting. Staff are encouraged to attend of one of the sessions: 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, or 9 a.m. Thursday, March 26. Both meetings will be held in Peace Dining Room.

Lunch hour yoga

Join Molly Lesmeister for a six-week yoga session through April 30. Two class options offered: Monday 11 a.m. and Thursday 1 p.m. Classes are 50 minutes in length. Sign up for one class a week, or both. Beginners welcome. Class will be held in the CFA. Props provided, no experience necessary. Registration is $18 for one class per week and $36 for two classes per week. Checks can me made payable to Luther College, payment due the first day of class. Avoid identity theft

To avoid identify theft such as fraudulent tax filing, be careful with any forms that contain a social security number. Do not send email or attachments of documents containing a name, birth date and social security number. Shred any paper documents for disposal. R.J. McElroy Trust student and faculty research projects

The Iowa College Foundation announces its call for proposals for R.J. McElroy Trust Student and Faculty Research Projects for 2015-2016.  Student participants must be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2015. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student, or team of students and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of a credible research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline for proposals is Friday, April 10. Forms are available in the Dean's Office, Union 262, or via email <brandtja>.

Staff Excellence Award

Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the staff excellence awards. Nominations are due Friday, April 10, to the Office of Human Resources. Winners will be announced at the Luther staff day. More information about the award and the nomination form can be found at http://www.luther.edu/hr/award/.

Health and dependent flex claims

Health and dependent flex claims for 2014 must be submitted for reimbursement by March 31, 2015. Claims must have been incurred by March 15, 2015, to be eligible for reimbursement from 2014 elections.

Summer 2015 faculty workshop

LIS and the Dean's Office are partnering to offer "Enhancing Student Learning Through Information Literacy and Technology" for faculty July 13-15. Participants will consider course-specific information literacy principles and departmental teaching goals as related to technology including: multimedia, social media, new media literacies, hardware, software, etc. Additional information and application can be found at:

Faculty and staff pilates classes

Faculty and staff Pilates classes start Wednesday, March 25, and will run for six weeks. The six week session costs $24 and meets in the CFA dance studio room 121 downstairs from 11:30 am.-12:30 p.m. every Wednesday. When faculty and staff attend at least four of the six week session, they will receive a $25 Luther gift card.

Community Supported Agriculture rebates are back

Employee households are eligible to receive up to $100 towards the purchase of a Community Supported Agriculture share or Garden Membership in 2015. Options include: a regular box of vegetables (traditional share, winter share), select from farmer's stand at the farmer's market (market share), or receive assistance with planting and maintaining a vegetable garden (garden membership). More information and registration forms.

Tournament championship t-shirt

Luther Community Garden

The gardening season is right around the corner. Registration for 2015 community garden plots is now open. The Luther Community Garden is a great way to learn more about gardening while growing something beautiful with others from the community. Plots are $30 for a full plot and $15 for a half. Prairie burn training

Training sessions for participation in prescribed burns on Luther's natural areas will be at 8 p.m. Monday, March 23, in Valders 262 and at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in Valders 262. Luther art exhibit: "Where There Were Many" by Hargrave and Ginsburg

"Where There Were Many" a collaborative "growing" exhibit by artists Katie Hargrave and Amber Ginsburg, and Luther College Art 111 3D Processes students, taught by Joe Madrigal, will be on display March 24-April 29, in the Wigley-Fleming Gallery.

A gallery reception for the artists will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30. The gallery reception and the exhibit are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'How to Teach Philosophy of Religion at a College of the Church'

Timothy Knepper, associate professor of religion at Drake University, will present the guest lecture "How to Teach Philosophy of Religion at a College of the Church" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in Valders 206. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Concert Band to perform

Luther's Concert Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in the CFL. The performance, part of Concert Band's Spring Break tour to Minnesota, California and Arizona, is open to the public with no charge for admission.  The concert will be streamed live at: http://portal.stretchinternet.com/lutheradmin/.

'Gifts from Norway'

The fifth annual Knut Gjerset lecture, "Gifts from Norway," will be presented by Laurann Gilbertson, chief curator of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the CFL Recital Hall.

A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge. The lecture and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

FAS: Luther Piano Quartet to present recital

The Luther College Piano Quartet will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the Noble Recital Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program opens with Mozart's Piano Quartet in G minor, followed by Antonin Dvorak's Miniatures for String Trio, and concludes with Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet in E-flat major.

Cadaver lab tours 

Student-led tours of the cadaver lab will be held at various times April 1-9, students, staff and faculty are invited to come and see the body in a whole new way. For information or to sign up, contact Steph, <frethams> or 387-1555.

Celebrate Easter with College Ministries

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a community-wide Easter Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in Decorah. Area ELCA congregations and pastors are coming together for this service. Luther students and Pastor Amy Zalk Larson will share in leadership. An offering will be collected to support missionaries Mary Beth and Bayo Oyebade in their work with those impacted with HIV/Aids in Jos, Nigeria. Email <ministry> for a ride to the service.

'Somewhere in America'

Sylvia Chan-Malik will present the lecture, "'Somewhere in America': Exploring the 20th-21st Century Musical and Cultural Expressions of U.S. Muslim Women" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in Olin 102. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Women, Faith, and Finance

There is still time to register for the Women, Faith, and Finance seminar on Friday, April 10, at the Hotel Winneshiek. Keynote speaker is Joanne Seymour Kuster on "Values and Valuables: Leaving the Best Legacy for Your Heirs." Area financial professionals will also present. Cost is $30 or $25 with guest. Dance Marathon

Luther College Dance Marathon is a student organization on campus that strives to provide a community of emotional and financial support for the children of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, one of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. To Joe Thompson and his family on the death of his mother, Hazel Thompson, who died Tuesday, March 17 at the Eastern Star Nursing Home, Decorah. She recently celebrated her 101st birthday. She resided with her husband, Harold, at their home in Moline, Illinois, for 73 years until the past few months when they came to live first with Joe and his wife, Rhonda, in their home and then for the last few weeks at the Eastern Star Nursing Home. The family is holding a private family service at Fjelstul Funeral Home with interment to take place in Lyons, Nebraska.

Retirement

Marty Steele has announced that she will retire on May 25 with more than 26 years of service at Luther.

Marty Berg has announced that she will retire on May 30 with more than 30 years of service at Luther.

Job openings

Custodial

Full-time (1.0 FTE) 12-month position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s). Hours will generally be Monday through Friday with some weekend work required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. Ability to perform maintenance and repair work of custodial equipment required. High school diploma or equivalent and valid driver license required.

Registrar

Full-time registrar responsible for leadership of the Registrar's Office, including maintaining student academic records and upholding the academic regulations of the college.

Requirements include: minimum of three years in a higher education setting; previous administrative experience as a registrar or associate or assistant registrar or as college faculty; knowledge of FERPA and other policies pertaining to compliance of federal rules and regulations; at least three years of experience with Colleague or a similar database and degree audit; and familiarity with trends in American higher education. A master's degree is preferred.

Outdoor/environmental education fellow

This is a six-month, full-time, 40 hour per week, position starting April or May 2015 and ending November or December 2015. Responsibilities include teaching, planning and implementing environmental programming throughout the summer and fall for students pre-K–12th grade, including six weeks of summer camp and a high school pre-college course in environmental studies.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Bethany (Bierman) Krepela '95, was awarded the prestigious Jay Bleeke Award at the Association of Lutheran Development Executives International Education Conference in Reno, Nevada, on Feb. 26.  The Jay Bleeke Award honors the memory of Jay Bleeke and is given annually to an ALDE young professional who shows remarkable promise in the development industry and who has served the association with distinction. At this year's conference Bethany was also elected unanimously to the ALDE Board of Directors. 

IRONHEAD (2015), a nine-minute documentary film on Decorah resident, Kelly Ludeking, recently earned Honorable Mention at the Oneota Film Festival. IRONHEAD was produced by Thomas C. Johnson, assistant professor of Communication Studies, and Neal Abbott ('15), Communication Studies student, with color by Aaron Lurth ('08), coordinator of visual media, and music by Brooke Joyce, associate professor of music and Composer-In-Residence. There will be a screening of IRONHEAD at the Hotel Winneshiek at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.  Johnson and Ludeking are participating in a short Q+A after.

In June of 2014, Bob Puffer and University of Minnesota's Mark McKay co-led an internationally attended Moodle gradebook working group in Long Beach, California. Over 1,000 users worldwide contributed ideas with a focus on accuracy, simplicity, ease-of-use, and performance (in that order). Nancy Gates-Madsen's article "Seeing is (Not) Believing: Eliseo Subiela's Dark Side of the Heart" was published in Eliseo Subiela, The Poet of Latin American Cinema, Ed. Nancy J. Membrez. (Edwin Mellen Press, 2015).

"The Islands," a poem by Reina María Rodríguez co-translated by Nancy Gates-Madsen and Kristin Dykstra, was included in the latest issue of Orion Magazine (March/April 2015), in a special section titled "Passport to Cuba."
