Call for nominations: College Resource Council vacancies
The College Resource Council includes a faculty or staff member, appointed by the President, who has expertise directly related to matters of diversity. The appointee serves for a three-year term. The CRC appointment by definition also puts the person on the Diversity Council. Novian Whitsitt held this position for 2014-15 but he is stepping down due to his election to the appointment tenure promotion committee.
All faculty and staff are invited to nominate an individual to serve a three-year term. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Please also offer your counsel on the experience or wisdom this nominee would bring to Luther College's national and global engagements with diversity.
Staff representative Paul Mattson is also leaving CRC, having completed his three-year term. Staff are invited to nominate a colleague who has budget center responsibility, from among the hourly and salaried employee cohort, to fill this three-year appointment.

Center for Ethics and Public Life
President Carlson and Dean Kraus are pleased to announce the membership of a planning group to re-vision the work and leadership of the Center for Ethics and Public Life. The following faculty and staff have agreed to serve: Terry Sparkes, chair; Wanda Deifelt; Andrew Last; LaDonna McGohan; Holly Moore; Pedro dos Santos; Lori Stanley; Mike Blair; Karen Martin-Schramm; and Wintlett Taylor-Browne. The work of this group will begin this spring and continue into the fall semester. As part of their charge, the group will provide opportunities for the broader community to share ideas for enhancing the work of the Center.

Luther students honored during Entrepreneurial Showcase
The 30th annual Luther College Entrepreneurial Showcase was held Tuesday, April 14, in Luther College's Peace Dinning Room. During the program, the Daryl and Audrey Erdman Prizes for Entrepreneurship were awarded to Luther senior Evan Sowder, junior Eric Tiller as well as Luther sophomores Patrick Larson, Gus Nelson and Lars Sorenson. Sowder was the grand prize winner of $5,000 with his company Evan Sowder Photography.

Luther College presents third annual student leadership awards
Luther College's Launching Luther Leaders program announced the recipients of the third annual Student Leadership Awards to individuals and groups for their contribution to the college's mission of service at their banquet held Sunday, May 3, on the Luther campus. Award recipients include Student Senate's Happiness Week for Outstanding Event or Activity; Luther College Dance Marathon for Outstanding Service Project; Maia Pugh was named Outstanding Student Leader and the Luther College Pep Band was awarded Outstanding Organization Award.

Luther College ultimate teams spin-off from conference wins
The three teams of the Luther Ultimate Flying Disc Association competed at ultimate conference playoffs April 11-12 in Ames, Iowa. The men's teams, Pound and Lufda, advanced to regionals and competed April 25-26, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The women's team, Freya, advanced to nationals for the first time in the team's history. They will compete May 16-17 in Rockford, Illinois.
Library books are due
May 15 is the due date for books checked out from the main stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 10. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by e-mailing <library>. Books that have already been renewed three times will not be renewed again; these books must be brought to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." View your account online by clicking on "Library Account" at http://www.luther.edu/library then "My Library Account" in the upper right corner after signing in on the next page to see what is checked out and when it is due.
Lawn fertilization
Weather permitting, the college lawns will be fertilized and sprayed for broad-leaf weeds beginning Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31. For more information, contact Facilities Services, 387-1146.
Save the date: Iowa Private College Week
Luther will participate in Iowa's annual Private College Week which is scheduled for Monday-Friday, August 3-7. Morning and afternoon sessions take place each day. The Admissions office seeks faculty and staff participation for an academic fair that will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day. Assistance at any or all of the sessions would be appreciated. The fair is designed to allow prospective students and parents an opportunity to learn more about Luther's academic programs. More information and requests for coverage will be sent out this summer.
Native prairie plant sale
Brighten up your yard with native wildflowers and grasses, and provide benefits to native pollinators at the native prairie plant sale at Decorah's Farmers Market on Saturdays, May 16 and 23. Proceeds benefit Luther's land stewardship program. Contact Molly, <mcnimo01>, with questions.

Luther and Climate Change mini series
The Center for Sustainable Communities is hosting a series titled, "Luther and Climate Change." The series runs from 9:40-10:30 a.m.Thursday mornings in Valders 367. The presentations will focus on one topic each and will last about 15 minutes, followed by a question and answer session. The last two sessions will focus on Luther's commitments, actions and local food. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments are provided.
Gardening Class Series: Container Gardening
Thursday, May 14, David Cavagnaro of the Pepperfield Project and Luther's Perry Halse discuss how best to create beautiful and productive container gardens. Class will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in Valders 362 and is open to all with no charge for attending. Peace Officers Memorial Day observance
A brief observance of national Peace Officers Memorial Day will be held at noon Friday, May 15, on Bentdahl Commons. Established by Congress in 1962, Peace Officers Memorial Day honors the more than 19,000 federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty since the founding of our nation. Rain location will be under the entrance canopy of the Center for Faith and Life.
Reception for Diane Tacke
Please join us in thanking Diane Tacke for more than 17 years of dedicated service to Luther College. A "Hats Off to Diane" farewell/retirement party will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in Peace Dinning. Attendees are invited to wear a favorite hat or a creative Diane-themed hat in her honor.
Pam Torresdal's retirement party
Please join us in celebrating Pam Torresdal's 30 years as Director of the Counseling Service to Luther. A retirement celebration will be 10-11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 21, in the atrium on the second floor of the Union. Pam has been instrumental in creating a professional, welcoming mental health service for students, in developing protocols for response to student crises and has been an ethical touchpoint for the entire Student Life staff. She will be missed.
Luther Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra perform showcase May 22
The Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform together for a Music Showcase, part of Luther's Commencement weekend events, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, in the CFL Main Hall.
Concert Band will perform the four movements of "Paris Sketches" by Martin Ellerby; "Irish Tune from County Derry" by Percy A. Grainger; "Masque" by Kenneth Hesketh; "Who Puts His Trust in God Most Just" by Bach, arranged by James Croft; and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.
Jazz Orchestra will perform "Song of Bilbao" by Pat Metheny, arranged by Alan Baylock; "Teach Me Tonight" with words by Sammy Cahn, music by Gene DePaul and arranged by Sammy Nestico; "Chinoiserie" by Duke Ellington, transcribed and edited by David Berger; and "Cherokee" by Ray Noble, arranged by Gary Lindsay.
The concert will also feature Vocal Jazz, performing "Danny Boy" arranged by Don Sebesky and "Partido Blue" by Michael Phillip Mossman.
Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra showcase May 23
The Luther College Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform together in a Music Showcase at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Nordic Choir will perform from a list of selections. Possible pieces include "Ave Verum Corpus" by William Byrd, "Singet Dem Herrn Ein Neues Lied" by Bach and "O Lord God" by Paul Chesnokov.
Symphony Orchestra will perform "Three Dances" from "The Three-Cornered Hat" by Mauel de Falla, "Ah! Je veux vivre" fromRoméo et Julietteby Charles Gounod, andCapriccio Espagnol, Op. 34 by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsako
Baccalaureate
A celebration and sending for the Class of 2015, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the CFL Main Hall. All are welcome. The celebratory worship service includes anthems by Collegiate Chorale conducted by Andrew Last, and hymns, prayers and blessings for graduates and their families. The service will last one hour. Rooted in the college's Lutheran Christian heritage and confidence in God's care for all people of the earth, this ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class.
Luther College to celebrate Commencement May 24
Luther College will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 24, in Carlson Stadium when President Paula Carlson will confer the Bachelor of Arts degree on Luther's class of 2015. Mike Danforth, a 1995 graduate of Luther and executive producer of National Public Radio's "Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me!" will give the commencement speech. Tickets are required for those attending the ceremony. Guests with tickets should be seated by 9:45 a.m.

Luther students in Justin Sprung's research lab Anuradha Anantharaman '15, Anni Okoneski '15 and Masha Statkevich '16, presented at the Midwestern Psychological Association's annual conference in Chicago, Illinois, April 30-May 2. Anantharaman presented "Core Self-Evaluations, Workload, and Counterproductive Behavior: Benefits of Positive Personality" and "The impact of Motivation on the Relationship between Autonomy and Job Satisfaction" with co-authors Danielle Basche '15 and Brandon Lafferty '15. Okoneski presented "Hiring Bias: The Effects of Gender Congruency and Agreeableness on Perceived Competence of Job Applicants when Applying for Sex-Stereotyped Positions." Statkevich presented "Self-Employment and Work-Family Conflict: The Moderating role of Core Self-Evaluations" with co-authors Anuradha Anantharaman '15 and Thomas Breen '16.
Brooke Joyce's Canticum Graduum was recently performed by the Iowa City Community String Orchestra, led by Carey Bostian. This was the second performance of Brooke's music by the group this year.
Jim Martin-Schramm presented "Why Lutherans Care for Creation" as a workshop at the ELCA Southeast Minnesota Synod Assembly in Rochester on May 9.
Holly Moore's chapter, "Animal Sacrifice in Plato's Later Methodology," was published in the collection, Plato's Animals: Gadflies, Horses, Swans, and Other Philosophical Beasts.
Sarah Wilder attended the Central States Communication Association Conference where she was a panelist in three sessions. Panels included: "Managing the Convergence Points of Work and Life: Discussions of Work-Life Balance with Pre-Tenure Female Faculty," "Converging Research and Teaching: Engaging Students with Interpersonal and Small Group Communication Research in the Classroom" and "Looking Back, Looking Forward: Exploring the Changes in Teaching Interpersonal Communication."
In late April, Victoria Christman accompanied a group of international studies, history, and political science students to Drake University in Des Moines, where they took part in the Baum Symposium on Ethics in the Professions. On the following day, four Luther students, Andrea Berkeland '15, Sarah Fox '15, Holly Harris '15, and Katie Vorderbruggen '16 presented papers at the first meeting of the Iowa Undergraduate Human Rights Research Conference.
Victoria Christman's monograph, "Pragmatic Toleration: The Politics of Religious Heterodoxy in Early Reformation Antwerp, 1515-1555" was published by the University of Rochester Press.
Keith Lesmeister had fiction published in Flyway: a journal of writing & environment, Necessary Fiction, Driftward Press, Red Earth Review, Pembroke Magazine and The Columbia Review.
On Friday May 1, Char Kunkel and 10 sociology students attended the Iowa Sociological Association annual meetings at Central College in Pella, Iowa. Seniors Kaila Will, Sarah Forsythe, Thomas Bottem, Kate Wagner and Amanda Becchetti presented papers. Will won the Ward Reynolds award for the best paper in criminology. Also in attendance were Sarah Doreza '17, Jorge Loyo '17, Aracelli Garcia '16, Paul Larson '15, and Mic Farrin '17.

It is national bike to work week. American communities have been successful in increasing bicycle commuting by providing Bike to Work Week events. The Winneshiek Energy District joins this effort by asking local Decorah, Iowa businesses to participate by offering discounts and incentives to customers that bike to their store.
