Luther and climate change

The Center for Sustainable Communities is hosting a series titled, "Luther and Climate Change." The series will run from 9:40-10:30 a.m. Thursday mornings in Valders 367. The presentations will focus on one topic each and will last about 15 minutes, followed by a question and answer session, and discussion. The upcoming sessions will focus on economics, technology, Luther's commitments and actions and local food. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

Exhibit of Strauss Scholarly Music Editions in Preus Library

The exhibit "Music Publishing Then and Now” is on display on the Main Floor of Preus Library. The exhibit features scholarly editions of compositions edited by John F. and Virginia F. Strauss and an overview of their 30 years of work in bringing the compositions of Ignaz Pleyel and Johann Vanhal to a broader audience. The display will be available through early June.

Blood drive

The National Chavez Challenge Blood Drive, held through American Red Cross, will be from 11 a.m.–5 p.m Tuesday, April 14. Schedule an appointment online at redcrossblood.org. All donors will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last. The blood drive is sponsored by Tau Delta Gamma.

Book sale

Preus Library's annual National Library Week book sale will be held through the end of this week. Hundreds of hardcover and paperback books will be available for purchase in the library. Prices will decline daily.

Brown bag session on student-focused information literacy and technology projects

2014 LIS Summer Workshop participants Wanda Deifelt, Pedro dos Santos and Thomas Johnson will present and discuss their information literacy and technology projects at a brown bag session from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, April 14, in the Mott Room. American Portraits

Robert Wolf, Bonnie Koloc and friends will read from a forthcoming Free River Press anthology, American Portraits, with stories from Pine Ridge Reservation, Texas ranches, Iowa farms, Chicago and elsewhere. Reading will be videotaped by Luther student Emily Tope for a documentary. The reading will be in Olin 102 from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, with no charge for admission. 

Brass Ensembles to perform

Luther College's Brass Ensembles will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Luther's Mass Brass Ensemble, Trumpet Ensemble, Horn Choir, Trombone Choir and Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, will perform both modern and classical styles, as well as arrangements and original compositions for brass.

Luther Admissions hosts April 17 Preview Day

Luther will host a Preview Day for current high school juniors Friday, April 17, giving students the opportunity to see the quality of life on campus, discover the academic excellence of Luther students and explore what life at Luther is really like. Parents are welcome to attend this event. Rising seniors can come learn about Luther's campus with a student-led tour and see the best places to study, eat and play.

1st annual Hemp Prize for Orchestral Performance

The 2014-2015 Richard C. and Joann M. Hemp Prize for Orchestral Performance recital will be given by Stephanie Diebel on French horn at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, in the Noble Recital Hall. A reception will follow the recital. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Stephanie, Luther senior from Western Springs, Illinois, is the first recipient of Luther College’s annual Richard C. and Joann M. Hemp Prize for Orchestral Performance. The prize is funded through an endowment established by Richard ’64 and Joann (Harr) Hemp ’65 of Reno, Nevada, and Decorah, Iowa. Awarded annually to a senior in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, selection is by audition and recognizes exceptional performance, talent, musicianship, and leadership. Mr. Hemp is a regent emeritus, former chair of the Luther Board of Regents, and former Interim President of Luther College.

An evening with Nick Jonas

Reminder: Nick Jonas will perform "An Evening with Nick Jonas," at Luther at 9:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Regents Center. Doors open at 8:45 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $35 and the performance is almost sold out.

Summer 2015 Faculty Computer Refresh

LIS will host a session on the Summer 2015 Faculty Computer Roll Tuesday April 21, 9:45-10:45 a.m. in Koren 217. Faculty members in the following departments are scheduled to receive new computers this summer as part of the four year replacement cycle and are encouraged to attend: Africana studies, Communication studies, Economics and Business, Education, History, Library and Information Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work. Luther College Woman's Club goes underwater

Dan Davis, assistant professor of Classics at Luther, will lead a marine archeology program for Luther College Woman's Club at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Peace Dining Room. A treat from the music department and a treat from the kitchen are on the agenda. All are welcome. This is the last meeting for the academic year until September.

Speech, Debate, and Competitive Acting

Please join the Luther College Speech, Debate and Competitive Acting team in their Forensics Reception, 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Peace Dining Room, to showcase the team's accomplishments. Luther College Collegiate Chorale to perform

Luther College's Collegiate Chorale will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the CFL. The performance, part of the Collegiate Chorale's annual Midwest Tour, is open to the public with no charge of admission. The concert will be streamed live at: stream.luther.edu. Collegiate Chorale, under the direction of Andrew Last, is composed of select junior and senior singers.

Wind and Percussion Ensemble and Varsity Band Concert

The Luther College Wind and Percussion Ensemble and Varsity Band will present a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in the CFL Main hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Luther College Wind and Percussion Ensemble and Varsity Band are directed by Joan deAlbuquerque.

Luther's Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley present lecture

Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley will present the Paideia Texts and Issues lecture "Invisible Geographies: Violence and Oppression in the Prison Industrial Complex and Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the CFL Recital Hall. A reception, held in Qualley Lounge, will follow the lecture. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther College Cantorei and Luther Ringers to perform April 24

Luther College's Cantorei and Luther Ringers will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the Noble Recital Hall. Cantorei, an auditioned women's choral ensemble with 36 members, is directed by Linda Martin. The Luther Ringers, a 13-member bell choir, is directed by Gregory Peterson. Together, Cantorei and the Luther Ringers will perform "Peter, Go Ring them Bells" arranged by Gwyn Arch.

'Northeast Iowa: A Quarter Century Retrospective'

"Northeast Iowa: A Quarter Century Retrospective" features samples from Robert Campagna's selenium-toned, film-based photographs of people and landscapes in Northeast Iowa. The gallery will be open for viewing April 22-May 24, in the upper level of the CFL. A gallery reception will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22. Both the gallery reception and the exhibit are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Geocache for College Cash

It is Money Smart Week April 20-24 and students can play "Geocache for College Cash" in Preus Library. Spread the word – students need to find seven posters, learn about seven financial topics every college student should know, answer seven quiz questions and can then be entered in the drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. Students can scan QR codes on posters to answer questions or use URL. Sponsored by Preus Library, Student Support Services and the Financial Aid Office.

Discovery Day

All children in grades K – 6 are invited to Discovery Day, sponsored by the Luther Environmental Education class, 9 a.m. – noon, Saturday, April 25. Luther College opera featured in 'Arias in April'

Iowa Public Radio will feature Luther College productions of Puccini's "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi" at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, and at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 26. As part of IPR's "Arias in April" season, the recordings can be heard online through the streaming media player found at www.iowapublicradio.org or for a list of IPR Classical broadcast frequencies see www.iowapublicradio.org.

Luther College Cathedral Choir to perform homecoming concert

Luther's Cathedral Choir will perform a homecoming concert titled, "I Believe," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance concludes the 2015 Cathedral Choir tour. Those unable to attend may view the concert live online at: stream.luther.edu. The 2015 Cathedral Choir tour program includes works by Bradley Ellingboe, Eriks Esenvalds, Ola Gjeilo, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Rosephanye Powell, Jake Runestad and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Student recitals

Regina Young, Luther College junior from Northfield, Minnesota, will perform a tenor saxophone recital at noon, Saturday, April 18.

Emily Clay, Luther College junior from Westfield, Wisconsin, will perform a soprano recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

Recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus with receptions to follow. Recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.
