CSS: Rhythmic Circus Sept. 25

The Center Stage Series presents home-grown hoofers from the Minneapolis arts scene, Rhythmic Circus, performing "Feet Don't Fail Me Now!" The performance is a dynamic tap and music mixture that combines hard-hitting percussive dance and a live band. Rhythmic Circus promises an enthralling medley of positivity and infectious rhythm starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the CFL Main Hall.

Faculty Artist Series: Kathryn Reed Sept. 26

Kathryn Reed will present a harpsichord recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program features music from the French and Italian Baroque, including a solo harpsichord work, "Overture in the French Style" by J.S. Bach.

Works by alumnus Welo on display through Oct. 12

An exhibit featuring the etchings and drawings of Larry Welo is on display on the upper level of the Center for Faith and Life through Oct. 12. His works are inspired by his surroundings, heavily influenced by where he lives. In 1994, Welo was attracted to the smaller communities and environment of southern Wisconsin. His career venues have shifted and he is now represented by and dedicated to working with fine art galleries. Welo's work has been exhibited and collected throughout the Midwest, along the East Coast, in Italy and Norway.

Works from alumni artists and spouses on display

An exhibit featuring the works of reunion alumni artists and alumni spouses will be on display on the main floor of Preus Library through Oct. 12. Featured artists include Heather Riley '99; Tom Maakestad '80; Christopher Cudworth '79; Anna Maakestad '79; Gwen Heffner '74; Larry Welo '74; Martha Winter '72; and Walter Ordway '69.

Graduate/Professional School Day

The Graduate/Professional School Day will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Union. More than 30 universities will attend to visit with students about their programs and application process. A list of those attending is on the Career Center web page at www2.luther.edu/careers.

SPIN Theatre presents One Act Play Festival

SPIN Theatre Company, Luther's student theatre organization, presents the One Act Play festival at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Storre Theatre. The festival is open to the public with no charge for admission. A freewill donation will be accepted. The festival will feature four student-directed scenes from plays by David Ives, Samuel Beckett, Anton Chekhov and Susan Glaspell. 

Admissions 'Science Exploration Day' Sept. 27

High school students beginning their college search are invited to campus starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, for Science Exploration Day. Invertebrate hike

Join Professor Kirk Larsen on a hike in Anderson Prairie and Hickory Ridge Woods at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Hikers should meet at the Baker Village Commons parking area to catch and learn more about the many invertebrates living in the area.

Faculty Artist Series: Carol Hester Sept. 27

Featuring works for flute and piano by Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy and Australian composer Carl Vine, Carol Hester will perform a flute recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital also features a work for solo flute by American composer Rhonda Larson and a work for alto flute and electronics by Armenian composer Eve Beglarian. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Student recital

Eric Angeroth Franks '15, from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, will perform a trumpet recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Angeroth Franks will perform works by Kent Kennan, Joseph Turrin, J.B.G. Neruda, Ignacio Calvo, Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, and Roy Hargrove.

Student recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall with receptions following performances. The recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Leaders of Learning visit

Charlie Blaich and Kathy Wise, director and associate director of Inquiries at the Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts (http://www.liberalarts.wabash.edu/) will visit campus Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Charlie and Kathy have conducted numerous workshops and presentations at colleges and universities across the country sharing what they have discovered from leading the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education. Their opening session takes place from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in Mott/Borlaug and is open to all faculty and staff.

'The Big Tiny' author Dee Williams in Decorah Sept. 30

Dee Williams, Portland-based author of the popular memoir and DIY tiny house book, "The Big Tiny," will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Valders Hall of Science room 206. Sponsored by the Friends of Decorah Public Library in partnership with the Luther College Center for Sustainable Communities, Williams' talk is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Virginia Gibbs and Luz Maria Hernandez to present 'Shattered Dreams' on Oct. 2

A new book by two former Luther College faculty members details the story of the April 2008 immigration raid of a meat packing plant in Postville, Iowa, from the viewpoint of the undocumented workers. Authors Virginia Gibbs and Luz Maria Hernandez will read from their book, "Shattered Dreams: The Story of a Historic ICE Raid in the Words of the Detainees," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Olin Building, Room 102. A reception will follow.

FAS: Spencer Martin and Du Huang to perform viola and piano recital Oct. 2

Spencer Martin and Du Huang will perform a viola and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will begin with a solo viola performance by Martin of Bach's "Ciaconna" from Partita in D Minor. The duo will then perform Sonata in A minor, D. 821 "Arpeggione," by Franz Schubert and Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120, No. 2 by Johannes Brahms.

Health Service will be holding flu clinics on the following dates and locations for staff and students:

Professor Sieber taught at Luther from 1965 to 2000.

I'm happy to share that I have recently accepted the position of University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at Denison University. I will miss Luther College, the Archives collections, the people who work here, and the Decorah community very much, but I am excited at this new opportunity in my career. Ann Highum spent part of the first two years of her retirement writing chapters for, and serving as chief editor of, a book which was recently published. Titled "Undergraduate Global Education: Issues for Faculty, Staff and Students," the book is part of a series of sourcebooks published by Jossey-Bass on various topics related to Higher Education.
