Announcements
President Carlson's Inauguration
The inauguration of Paula J. Carlson as the 10th president of Luther College will be held Friday, Oct. 10, during Luther's Homecoming weekend. The investiture ceremony, 3 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, is open to the public with no charge for admission. For those unable to attend the ceremony, the event will be live-streamed on the web. An Inaugural Reception in Bentdahl Commons will follow the ceremony.
Inaugural Symposium 'Exploring Faith and Literature' Oct. 10
At 11:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, the college will host the Inaugural Symposium, "Exploring Faith and Literature," in the Noble Recital Hall, located in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The symposium is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Panelists include President Paula J. Carlson; Jacqueline Bussie, director, Forum on Faith and Life and associate professor of religion, Concordia College; Peter Hawkins, professor of religion and literature, Yale Divinity School; the Rev. Jim Honig, senior pastor, Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and Robert D. Schultz, Luther class of 1974, the John P. Fishwick Professor of English, Roanoke College.
A scholar of medieval literature and modern American literature, this symposium responds to President Carlson's academic interests in religion and literature. While teaching in the English Department at Yale University, she began a collaboration with Dante scholar Peter Hawkins, professor of religion at Yale Divinity School, to create the anthology "Listening for God: Contemporary Literature and the Life of Faith" (Augsburg Fortress). That first volume, part of a project funded by Lilly Endowment that sought to enrich theological education by looking deeply at the arts, has grown into a four-book series.
HR Director candidate open forums
Beginning tomorrow, four finalists for the Human Resources director position will be interviewed on campus. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the candidate open forums, held from 9:15-10:15 on Wednesday, Oct. 1 in CFL Recital Hall; Friday, Oct. 3 in Peace Dining Room; Monday, Oct. 6 in CFL Recital Hall; and Monday, Oct. 13 in CFL Recital Hall.

Alternative campus parking Oct. 9-10
To help accommodate the large number of guests expected for President Carlson's Inauguration Friday, Oct. 10, the following special event parking restrictions will be in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 through 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.
The entire lot behind the Library and the lot on the north side of Valders will be reserved for visitors. Faculty, staff and students are asked to find alternative parking during these times. Alternative lots include Farwell, Regents Center, Jenson and the City Pool Lot. Students may not park in faculty/staff spaces. In addition, the spaces generally reserved for visitors on the east side of the CFL will be posted as Handicapped Parking. Handicapped Parking spaces will be added on the west side of the CFL as well. Cooperation with these restrictions is greatly appreciated.
Emergency procedures booklet
Luther's Emergency Response Team is issuing a new Emergency Procedures book, and asks that faculty and staff recycle their old (blue cover) copies. Faculty and staff should place the new (orange cover) Emergency Procedures book in an easy-to-see and easy-to-reach place in their work station. Additional copies are available in Human Resources and Campus Safety and Security. The guide will also be available online at: http://www2.luther.edu/safety/

AM 1240 changing formatting
KDEC AM 1240 is now Good Time Oldies 1240 KDEC. This is a format of rock-n-roll hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Because of this format change, we are no longer able to run Luther Chapel on KDEC. We are proud of the partnership over the many years between KWLC and KDEC in offering this programming to our audience and we are hoping that, in this digital age, interested listeners will still be able to still hear chapel online at luther.edu either as a stream from Luther or as a podcast later. However Luther chooses to proceed with Luther Chapel, we are grateful for the time we've been able to offer this programming at KDEC.

Attention work study supervisors
Please assist with the October student payroll. Time cards must be approved by supervisors no later than noon Friday, Oct. 3. Students have until midnight on Oct. 2 to sign time cards. This is a short time frame in which to approve cards. This has to happen in order for us to process payroll and submit it to the bank before the Columbus Day holiday. If unavailable to sign time cards on Oct. 3, please make arrangements with an alternate supervisor to sign the time cards.
Get meals fast at the Grab-N-Go
Faculty and staff can purchase to-go meals from the Grab-N-Go line in the lowest level of the Union. Grab-N-Go offers many of the same great opportunities as the cafeteria, with the options of a hot entree, a side and a beverage, or a hot or cold sandwich, a side and a beverage. Staff meal prices are: $4.25 for breakfast, $5.80 for lunch and $7.25 for dinner.
Drop-in singing circle
Jubilize! is a new drop-in singing circle that takes place every Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m., and the group meets near the fireplace in the Union. Every voice is welcome. All songs taught in the oral tradition by song leader Liz Rog. This event is sponsored by the Wellness Program.
A reminder from facilities
When checking out a fleet vehicle, it is important to pick up and return the vehicle at the times stated in the request. If this courtesy is not followed, it may affect other reservations. When returning a vehicle, it is important to park it in the designated fleet vehicle parking spots on the North side of the Facilities parking lot. Big vans should be returned to the stalls at the Southeast corner of the lot.
Call for abstracts for Faculty Research Symposium
The Faculty Research Symposium Steering Committee, which includes Andy Hageman, Holly Moore, Ben Moore, Todd Pedlar and Amy Weldon, invites faculty to submit 200-word abstracts for presentations at the second annual Luther College Faculty Research Symposium. The Symposium is Saturday, Nov. 1. Go to this site for information and to view last year's schedule and sample abstracts. Submit abstracts to <frs> by Friday, Oct. 3.

2014 Fall Semester Enrollment
- Luther's 2014 fall semester student enrollment is 2,385.
- Our new registered student total is 595 (559 first-year students, 36 transfer students).
- U.S. Students of Color total 210 (8.8 percent of total enrollment), and International students total 146 (6.1 percent of total enrollment).
- Forty states (includes Iowa) and 61 countries (includes U.S.) are represented in our total enrollment.
- Student enrollment full-time equivalent is 2,358.
- Forty-one percent of our total enrollment report Lutheran as their religious affiliation.
- First-year to second-year persistence for the 2013 first-year student cohort is 85.2 percent, first-year to third-year persistence for the 2012 first-year student cohort is 83.2 percent, and first-year to fourth-year persistence for the 2011 first-year cohort is 82.5 percent.
- Our most recent four-year graduation rate (2010 first-year student cohort graduating by August 31, 2014) is 71.4 percent.

No smoking on campus
The state of Iowa (Iowa Code 142D) prohibits smoking on campus. The college smoke-free policy includes smoking devices such as e-cigarettes or vapor cigarettes as prohibited forms of smoking. The entire policy can be viewed on the web. Please remind any staff, faculty or students of this policy if it is broken. Direct any questions to the Human Resources Office 387-1415.

'The Big Tiny' author Dee Williams in Decorah Sept. 30
Dee Williams, Portland-based author of the popular memoir and DIY tiny house book, "The Big Tiny," will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Valders Room 206. National Student Day Oct. 2 'Dare to Challenge'

Virginia Gibbs and Luz Maria Hernandez to present 'Shattered Dreams' on Oct. 2
A new book by two former Luther College faculty members details the story of the April 2008 immigration raid of a meat packing plant in Postville, Iowa, from the viewpoint of the undocumented workers. Luz Maria Hernandez and Virginia Gibbs will hold a book signing of their book,"Shattered Dreams: The Story of a Historic ICE Raid in the Words of the Detainees" in the Luther Book Shop on Thursday, Oct. 2 from noon to 2:15 p.m. The authors will also read from their book at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Olin Room 102. A reception will follow the reading which includes another book signing.
FAS: Spencer Martin and Du Huang to perform viola and piano recital Oct. 2
Spencer Martin and Du Huang will perform a viola and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program will begin with a solo viola performance by Martin of Bach's "Ciaconna" from Partita in D Minor. The duo will then perform Sonata in A minor, D. 821 "Arpeggione," by Franz Schubert and Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 120, No. 2 by Johannes Brahms.
Flu clinic
Health Service will hold flu clinics on the following dates and locations for staff and students:

FAS: Jacob Lassetter to perform vocal recital Oct. 3
Jacob Lassetter, will perform a baritone recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. Lassetter will perform a vocal concert, performing sacred works from the 19th century to the present, in German as well as English. The concert includes works from composers Johannes Brahms, Dorian Le Gallienne and Carlisle Floyd.
Student recitals
Dan Gibson '15, from Urbandale, Iowa, will perform a bass recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
Kasey Thorson '15, from Hayfield, Minnesota, will perform a soprano recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
Student recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall with receptions following performances. The recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.
CSS: San Jose Taiko
Join the "Rhythm Journey" as the Center Stage Series presents San Jose Taiko, a traditional Japanese drumming ensemble from San Jose, California. Watch the complex movements and feel the propulsive sounds as San Jose Taiko combines traditional Japanese drumming with dance. San Jose Taiko is celebrating their 40th anniversary season with the performance "Rhythm Journey" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in the CFL.
FAS: Carla Hanson to perform voice recital Oct. 5
Carla Hanson will perform a Spanish voice recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. Hanson, soprano, will perform pieces mainly from Spanish and Argentinian composers with Ainhoa Urkijo, former Luther faculty member, collaborating on piano.
Celebration of Eid al Adha
Luther students and community members of all religious backgrounds gather to learn about Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, in Peace Dining Room. A brief program of reflections by students who grew up celebrating the festival will be followed by light refreshments and a time for conversation. Eid al Adha is a Muslim festival that marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The celebration is part of a series of "interfaith holiday celebrations" that allow students an opportunity to share parts of their own traditions.
Fall career fair
The fall career fair runs from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Union. This is the largest fall fair ever held on campus. More than 40 organizations attend to visit with students about various internships, part-time and full-time opportunities. A list of those attending can be viewed on the Career Center web page.
SAC presents Inaugural Ball
Student Activities Council invites the public to this year's Flamingo Ball, transformed into "The Inaugural Ball," to welcome President Paula Carlson, along with her friends and family, to the Decorah and Luther communities. Come celebrate and dance to the sounds of variety band The Sevilles at 9 p.m. homecoming Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Main Gym of the Regents Center.
Art program faculty on display in Kristin Wigley-Fle
A diverse exhibit featuring works by Luther College Art Program faculty is on display in the Kirstin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery through Oct. 17. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Wigley-Fleming Gallery. Faculty artists include Ben Moore, Joe Madrigal, Lea Donhowe, Aaron Lurth and David Kamm. Other artists include eeeritus Harley Refsaland sabbatical replacement Justin Sorensen.

I'm happy to share that I have recently accepted the position of University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at Denison University. I will miss Luther College, the Archives collections, the people who work here, and the Decorah community very much, but I am excited at this new opportunity in my career. Alison Dwyer, wife of Philip Freeman, has been undergoing diagnosis and treatment at Mayo. She is back in Decorah, but has to go back to Rochester daily for radiation treatment for two weeks. A meal calendar will be sent out soon via email. To help or donate, please add to the Freeman’s Oneota Co-op account, so they can get groceries and meals from the deli. Also, please refrain from visiting until treatments are over. They thank everyone for the outpouring of kindness and prayers and well-wishes!

To Ann Sponberg Peterson and Gregory Peterson on the death of Ann's mother, Florence Larson Sponberg of Mankato, Minnesota, who passed away on Sept. 27 at her home. A visitation will be offered from 4-7 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary Oct. 1. A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.

Andy Hageman published the essay "Signals of Nature, Prestidigital Ecology" in the journal "Green Letters: Studies in Ecocriticism." The essay is grounded in his J-Term 185 EcoMedia seminars and features student ideas and writings.
Elizabeth Steding presented the paper "Dreimal DDR: The Portrayal of GDR Literature in Oberstufe Textbooks since 1990" at the German Studies Association Conference in Kansas City on Sept. 19.
Laura Peterson attended the ICREA Workshop on Pliocene climate and its implications for the earth's future in Barcelona, Spain. Her presentation, "Spectral and secular evolution of northern and southern hemisphere climate records from the Pliocene to the present," included Luther student co-authors Devon Hovey '15 and Kat Huska '15.
Amy Morey '06 was awarded the 2014 Monsanto Research Grant Award. The research grant provides funds to outstanding Entomological Society of America student members who are undertaking research projects.
Keith Lesmeister has recent and forthcoming stories and essays in "Harpur Palate," "Redivider," "Natural Bridge," "The Water~Stone Review" and "Seeking Its Own Level: an anthology of writings about water."
