ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Carlson announces new vp appointment
Luther College President Paula J. Carlson has announced the appointment of Eric J. Runestad as vice president for finance and administration, beginning July 1.
"Dr. Runestad brings more than 20 years of experience and success in financial, program and operations management in higher education and nonprofit organizations. I look forward to Dr. Runestad's service as chief financial officer, building on Luther's history of wise stewardship of the college's resources to achieve our mission," said President Carlson.
Runestad succeeds Diane Tacke, who served 18 years as Luther's vice president for finance and administration.

As the Development team does the final wrap-up and close out for the 2014-15 fiscal year (we're double-checking all our tabulations, crossing the t's and dotting the i's), it looks like this past year will be one for the record books. With deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all our generous donors to Luther College--alumni, parents, friends, faculty/staff/emeriti, foundations and corporations, all--we are happy to report $9.78 million in outright gifts/pledges and $4.8 million in planned gifts have been given to the college for a grand total of $14,594,446. All this success is accomplished in partnership with our entire community. Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone!
Retired faculty granted emeritus/emerita status

COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Staff Day location change
Staff Day begins today, June 9, with lunch at 12:15 p.m. in Oneota Market. Those who have not yet registered can do so beginning at 11:45 a.m. in the main lobby of Dahl Centennial Union.
Roof work continues at Preus Library
Roof work began Tuesday, May 26, at Preus Library. Please honor the barricades that are set up in and around the library and parking lot to protect you, your car and the workers involved. The front door of the library remains open throughout the work, though the approach to the front door may vary.
Luther farm stand
Stop by Oneota Market to purchase fresh vegetables from Luther's farm. We're celebrating our first season using the newly constructed high tunnel by offering fresh produce at discounted prices to students and staff. This week's selection will include: kale, collard greens, multi-colored radishes and a variety of mixed salad greens.
Center Stage Series subscription packages on sale
Satisfy a yearning for travel and adventure from the comfort of the Luther College Center for Faith and Life through the 2015-16 Center Stage Series, Sept. 18-April 7. Come explore a series of 10 unique and creative experiences designed to engage and nurture curiosity about the world. Tickets for Center Stage Series events may be purchased as a subscription package through Aug. 28. Center Stage Series subscribers can build an individualized entertainment season by choosing tickets to a full range of radiant performances.
School Matinee Performances announced
Luther College's School Matinee Performances for the 2015-16 season feature four theater performances: "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler," "Letters Home," "The Berenstain Bears LIVE! in 'Family Matters, The Musical'" and "Skippyjon Jones, Snow What (and The Seven Chihuahuas)." The varied performances offer age-appropriate entertainment for youth ages two to 18.
Area schools have seating priority for school matinees; community members are welcome as space is available. Performances take place in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall and each show is approximately one hour in length.
Seeking staff nominations for Diversity Council
Non-exempt staff are invited to nominate a colleague to serve a three-year term on Luther's Diversity Council, replacing Bridget Christopher. Nominations should be sent to Marcia Bullerman, <bullerma>, by June 10. The three persons who receive the most nominations will be forwarded to President Carlson and she will make the appointment.
OFS closes out end of year
The college's fiscal year ended May 31. The Office for Financial Services reminds all faculty and staff that supplies, materials, etc., must have been received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 2014-15 budget.
Additionally, all outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices-no faxed copies, supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by June 12 to be included in FY 2014-15 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Call with questions and, as always, thank you for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

Presto pesto
Bring the taste of Italy into your kitchen and feel confident in your preparation. The simple equation behind pesto is greens+olive oil+nuts=pesto. The variations and combinations from this starting point are seemingly endless. Explore techniques to incorporate almonds, walnuts, tomatoes and more into pesto–not to mention the many uses of pesto when it is complete. Class will be noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, in Valders 379. Faculty, staff and students are welcome. Registration is required.
The basics of risotto
Do you love risotto? Have you heard that it can be tricky to make? Join Kristen Underwood as she helps to demystify risotto. She will demonstrate a basic risotto recipe and discuss the many delicious ways it can be dressed up with the addition of seasonal vegetables. The class will be noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, in Valders 379. All faculty, staff and students are welcome. Registration is required.
Slow and low: African peanut stew
Connecting the dots between our busy lifestyles and our search for good food, the Green Iowa AmeriCorps team brings slow cooking to the Luther College classroom. Join us for a lunch hour recipe demonstration and learn the many merits of slow cooking, from easy preparation to lower energy usage to increased local food consumption. Each class participant will receive in-class samples, recipes and informational handouts. Class will be noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, in Valders 379. Registration required.
Preview Day June 19
Luther College will host a Preview Day for rising high school juniors and seniors Friday, June 19, giving students the opportunity to see the quality of life on campus, discover the academic excellence of Luther students, and explore everything else Luther has to offer. 'Kernels of the Past' art exhibit
Luther College and Decorah's Seed Savers Exchange are pleased to present "Kernels of the Past: Portraits of Heirloom and Historic Maize Varieties," a sample of David Cavagnaro's garden photography on display during the majority of the summer in Preus Library on the Luther campus.
The exhibit, on loan from the Roy J. Carver Co-Lab Collection at Iowa State University, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

New employees
Meg Hammes has been appointed the new Director of Counseling Services. Meg currently serves as the Director of Counseling and Wellness Services at Upper Iowa University. A Licensed Independent Social Worker, she earned her bachelor's degree from UNI in sociology in 1991 and her master's degree from St. Ambrose in social work in 1999. She will begin her work on Aug. 3. Meg lives in Calmar with her partner Sam and their two children.

To Bryan and Kasey Nikkel. Wrenn Rebecca Nikkel was born at 7:06 a.m. Tuesday, June 2. At birth, she weighed six pounds, three ounces and was 18 inches long. Mom and baby are doing great!

Housing assignments coordinator: Full-time housing assignments coordinator serves as the office manager for the Residence Life Office and works cooperatively with the director of Residence Life. The coordinator interacts extensively with a wide range of constituencies. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills, three to five years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people. Previous experience in a detail-oriented, complex, highly public and sometimes challenging work environment is preferred. Experience using Word and Excel programs is required.

Janet Hunter was a guest of honor at the Riverview Center's annual dinner Thursday night. Janet was given the Spotlight Award for her tireless efforts both preventing sexual violence and supporting victims of sexual violence. Thank you, Janet, for working to make the Luther community safer for our students!
Todd Green gave lectures on Islamophobia at NorthPark Presbyterian Church and Kessler Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas, on May 31. He was also interviewed by Reuters and KPTR Radio in Palm Springs, California, on the armed anti-Islam protest in Phoenix, Arizona.
John Goodin's piece "Deer Track: June 2, 2004" is included in the new book "Exploring Classical Mandolin: Technique & Repertoire," authored by August Watters and published by Berklee Press. Goodin's tune "Riff City" is included in the newly published "Portland Collection: Contra Dance Music in the Pacific Northwest, Volume 3"; a collection of over 300 dance tunes compiled by Susan Songer and Clyde Curley.
Luther College's Libby Logsden '15 of Iowa City, Iowa, received the college's Jenson Medal at May 24 commencement ceremonies for the Luther class of 2015. Luther's Jenson Medal is presented each year to an outstanding senior, selected by the graduating class, who best demonstrates the ideals of the college through service to students and the college community.
Luther College is pleased to announce that Kate Elliott, Luther assistant professor of art history and curator of the Fine Arts Collection, is one of a select group of faculty members chosen by the Council of Independent Colleges to participate in a special week-long seminar on teaching European art in context. The seminar is designed for full-time faculty members who regularly teach art history at smaller colleges and universities, and aims to strengthen the teaching of art history to undergraduates at these institutions.

This past Saturday, June 6, saw the first matches of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. Since its beginnings in 1991, this tournament has gathered the fiercest competitors from around the globe once every four years to determine the world champions of women's soccer.
